non-MAGSR & Shelter Dogs Available for Adoption

The following listings show LOCAL available GSD or GSD mixes that are being surrendered by their owners or placed by their fosters.

This page is NOT for the 'selling' of dogs.

If you have inquired about any dog listed on this page and been asked for an "adoption fee" of any kind, that is not clearly stated in the listing, please contact us immediately at web@magsr.org and let us know.  As a dog rescue organization, we advocate rescue adoptions only.  In Addition, and for the same reasons, we require that all dogs listed on this page be spayed/neutered as a condition of their adoption.

These dogs are not part of the MAGSR program; we have not evaluated any of these dogs.  We list them here because they are special and deserve a second look - - and a second chance.  For more information on any of these dogs, please contact the listed party, not MAGSR.

If you are looking to find your dog a new home, please click on the adopt a pet link, below, to create a listing.

Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment. If you aren't prepared to work with your dog through the adjustment period and beyond, please look no further. If you wont keep your dog if you move or as your family grows, please look no further. If you aren't prepared to nurse your dog back to health if he gets ill or if she needs surgery, please look no further.

Rescue dogs have been through so much - dumped in shelters or found roaming the streets. They have been abandoned, neglected, starved and possibly physically abused. They need TIME, PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING and LOVE in order to succeed in their new homes. Sometimes it may take several months for a rescue dog to make the adjustment to your home and family. If you aren't 100% committed to making this work with your new dog, then please don't adopt. Any adopter of a rescue dog who has been through the adjustment period can tell you its worth it. No dog is perfect….just like no human is perfect. Please don't expect too much too soon from your new dog.

Lincoln Burgoon
DESCRIPTION:

Lincoln is a very sweet dog. We have enjoyed having him. Unfortunately he has severe anxiety that seems to have worsen over the last year or so. The anxiety mainly occurs when there are storms or Fireworks. He has some separation anxiety but walking him every day helps that. We have tried a variety of different approaches from the calming collar, leaving worn shirts of ours with him, tried crating him when anxiety worsened but he broke half a tooth which we had to have extracted. On the days his behavior is positive, we make sure we praise him and give him treats. Lately if there  are storms, he has destroyed door knobs with his mouth, he clawed or torn up a wooden door frame, damaged our child’s high chair. At this point we are worried he is going to hurt himself and/or our daughter will injure herself on the damaged items/furniture in our house. As far as his demeanor with people and children, he is wonderful. He has never ever shown any aggression to our daughter. In fact, we have worked very hard with our daughter to know how to approach a dog but sometimes she will come from behind him and tug on his tail; and he never has shown aggression. If anything, he just walks away from her. Of course we praise him for how he behaves with her.

DESCRIPTION:

Marlene is as smart as she is beautiful.  She has worked with a trainer and is very eager for guidance and wants to please.  Outside, she loves room to run and be active, while inside she is calm and very affectionate.  She is athletic and very treat motivated. She has been the perfect houseguest in her foster home in terms of housetraining and crate training.

While Marlene can be reactive when she meets new people and new dogs, if you give her a proper introduction and just a few minutes, she warms right up.  She has been fostered with cats and does well with them.  She hasn't been tested with young children.

Found as a stray in rural SC, her transition to big city life wasn't the smoothest.  Marlene needs an experienced and confident adopter because she is a fearful dog who tends to be reactive in situations she deems to be scary or chaotic.  She does really well in quiet, rural environments, but can also be successful in a more suburban environment with the right set up and active training/management.  This is not a dog who can live in the city as the pace and noise is just too stressful for her.

Marlene was significantly underweight when she was rescued, but was otherwise healthy.  She may have been a stray for some time, or perhaps neglected, but she has since put on close to 30 lbs and looks great.

This dog is a stunner and she is very loyal and sweet to her humans.  She needs a calm household with a patient adopter, who is willing to work with a positive reinforcement trainer to continue to build her confidence and manage her fear/reactivity.  If you're a fan of this majestic breed, you will know she is worth it!

Like most shelter dogs, Marlene may need a refresher on housetraining and crate training. We ask all of DC PAWS’ fosters to work on both house and crate training with their foster dog.

The adoption fee for this dog is $350.  If you are interested in adopting Marlene, please submit an adoption application at https://dcpawsrescue.org/adoption-info/adoption-application-dogs/

TrixieTrixie
DESCRIPTION:

Trixie was on our schedule to be euthanized due to separation anxiety, destructive behavior and growling at the owners family member. Upon further inquiry we determined that she had undergone several drastic changes in her home life and wasn't given any tools with which to cope and was set up to fail. I took her on personally to see if I could help her become a stable, good, canine citizen.

Let me tell you, she has done phenomenal. I've had her for about 7 weeks. She was quickly started on multiple behavior modification drugs and crate trained. She has also taken a lot of confidence from my two well mannered dogs. I am now tapering her medications in an effort to find the bare minimum she needs to continue doing well. She is still sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements but is much less scared than when she first came home (and we live next to a military base, so this gets tested daily). She is not a fan of hardwood/tile floors due to having hip dysplasia/arthritis and needs some help getting up in my car but can jump down okay. Separation anxiety isn't even an issue when she is in the kennel. She easily goes in (knows the command "night night") and doesn't fuss or dig or chew. She is the sweetest girl, constantly wagging her tail and always happy to see a kind face. Her ideal home would be a calm, stable house with at least one other dog. Minimal slick surfaces and stairs. Privacy fenced in yard. Comfy couch. Preferably a home where she will not be crated for more than 6-8 hours at a time. Probably would be okay with well trained older children.

She is located in NC, but I am wiling to drive. References will be checked thoroughly. Adoption fee of $200 (a portion will be donated to the organization that aids in finding her forever home). She will come with meds and supplements, is vaccinated, spayed, on heartworm/flea and tick prevention, and recently had perfectly normal bloodwork and negative fecal.

Vader
DESCRIPTION:

My name is Vader and I am a 3 year old German Shepherd. I am around 90 lbs and am a very handsome big boy! I play well with most dogs, am crate trained, leash trained, and I lay down to eat my food. I also love to play ball and will bring the ball back every time just so I can fetch it again! I am very loyal and love my family and small children, but I am protective and sometimes don’t like new people coming into our home. I am not a dog who loves cuddly attention, but am very obedient and will do as told. I am looking for a human who can give me structure and continue to work with me. I would love to live somewhere where I can have a job, such as guarding the property.

If you want to take me home please contact Companion Animal Clinic at 703-250-4100. I can’t wait to meet my forever human!
