non-MAGSR & Shelter Dogs Available for Adoption

The following listings show LOCAL available GSD or GSD mixes that are being surrendered by their owners or placed by their fosters.

This page is NOT for the 'selling' of dogs.

If you have inquired about any dog listed on this page and been asked for an "adoption fee" of any kind, that is not clearly stated in the listing, please contact us immediately at web@magsr.org and let us know.  As a dog rescue organization, we advocate rescue adoptions only.  In Addition, and for the same reasons, we require that all dogs listed on this page be spayed/neutered as a condition of their adoption.

These dogs are not part of the MAGSR program; we have not evaluated any of these dogs.  We list them here because they are special and deserve a second look - - and a second chance.  For more information on any of these dogs, please contact the listed party, not MAGSR.

If you'd like to have your dog posted here, please follow the instructions at this link. Donations are appreciated!

Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment. If you aren't prepared to work with your dog through the adjustment period and beyond, please look no further. If you wont keep your dog if you move or as your family grows, please look no further. If you aren't prepared to nurse your dog back to health if he gets ill or if she needs surgery, please look no further.

Rescue dogs have been through so much - dumped in shelters or found roaming the streets. They have been abandoned, neglected, starved and possibly physically abused. They need TIME, PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING and LOVE in order to succeed in their new homes. Sometimes it may take several months for a rescue dog to make the adjustment to your home and family. If you aren't 100% committed to making this work with your new dog, then please don't adopt. Any adopter of a rescue dog who has been through the adjustment period can tell you its worth it. No dog is perfect….just like no human is perfect. Please don't expect too much too soon from your new dog.

Are you looking for a true companion? Someone to snuggle?  Cuddling by fire? Need someone to go for long walks and share life with?  My name is Farrah and I’m a 4 year old spayed female German Shepherd.  I have had a rough life so far but things are turning around for me!  Despite my past I’m super loving and like to have my belly rubbed now!  I really like older kids (no young ones please), long walks, rides of all duration, lots of love, attention and food (my foster mommy has me on a diet to get back my girlish figure).  I don’t care for other dogs, can’t live with one and on walks I shy away from them.  My foster mommy says I’m super sweet, smart and have learned so much with her.  I need someone who can be firm and structured, but loving.  She says there is a forever home where the whole family or person will love me so much, go for long walks and include me on their car rides!!  Are you that family or person for me?  I have so much love to give!!!  PM my foster mommy  Heather Kauffman so she can talk to you (Serious inquiries only).  Love, Farrah

Layla

Color: Black & Tan
Gender: Female
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Approximate Age: 3 years 10 months
Current Size: 50 lbs
Housebroken: Yes
Obedience Trained: Basic Commands
History: She was bought from a breeder as a puppy and lived with a couple as an equally indoor/outdoor dog. She lacked basic socialization skills and is still stranger reactive. Layla came to the shelter afraid of everything-even her own shadow. (Her owners never exposed her to other people or animals and they never took her anywhere to expose her to new places/things) Her home environment for almost 3 years was stressful- Dad was the “enforcer”- which, after observing them together meant that he constantly screamed at her and violently yanked on her leashes if she did something “wrong”. Mom was the “nurturer” that provided Layla with daily attention/affection. With that said though- Mom would also hit/punch/kick her when she did something “wrong”. That happened at least once a day, every day for 3 years. She does have one bite in her history- the kennel attendant broke up a 3-way dog fight (not initiated by Layla) and she did bite him on his finger.

Layla
Layla
DESCRIPTION:

Layla is 50 lbs, spayed, up to date on all vaccines, and micro-chipped. Her birth date is June 2014.

Layla is still fearful of strangers; new people need to put the least amount of pressure on her to enable her to feel comfortable enough to approach them/sniff them out. With training, she is to the point where she will leave strangers alone if they leave her alone. This means strangers completely ignore her and keep their distance. She is content to stay on her “place” or in her crate with strangers in the same room as long as they simply ignore her. Once you are trusted by Layla, YOU ARE IN. Layla will play with you, let you pet her, rub her belly, take toys from her mouth. You can sit in her kennel with her, feed her, give treats. She shows no signs of kennel aggression or resource guarding with the people she knows. (Every staff member at the shelter is on this level with her) She is e-collar conditioned which has done wonders for her! Her recall is fantastic and enjoys her off-leash time!

The most important thing to stress about Layla is that she is NOT a social butterfly. (We prefer a home with no children simply because there will be less people-traffic) She is not going to be the dog that will happily greet strangers coming in your house (she will have to be crated or kept in a separate closed off area); she will not be the type of dog that can be taken out to dog-friendly stores/dog parks. (She does like most other dogs, it's the stranger aspect of public places) When she is out on walks, you will have to be her advocate and keep strangers from approaching.  She is a beautiful dog and even here in the shelter lobby- people try to inch their way closer and closer to pet her; everyone thinks they have “the special touch” with fearful dogs &/or German Shepherds. Layla will exhibit “aggressive” behavior if a stranger puts too much pressure on her- barking, growling, lunging…

My name is Raven I am a beautiful black shepard. I am 5 years old originally from Florida. You see my family abandoned me and 4 others during the hurricane. I was found by an amazing team called the Guardians of Rescue. I am truly lucky to be alive. I was left crates without food and water and they took me in. They cared for me, I am UTD on all shots and spayed. Is there no one out there that could love me? I love all people and everyone I meet. I have been working with a trainer who think a house with no other dogs or cats would be best. Now, I like cats but he still thinks it best if I am an only child. If you are looking for a single girl to love I am the girl for you. I would like a home where I can take walks and play. A place where I can be loved and treated kindly. I hope I am not asking to much! If you can find it in your heart to love me please contact or PM American Dog Project and someone will tell you more about me. Please find it in your heart to learn more about me! I am truly one in a million and worth taking the time to get to know!

DESCRIPTION:

Will you write the next page in the story of my life?

I'm 2 years young and I am a great dog for an experienced dog owner.

I am what humans call dominant. I'm NOT aggressive, but I think I'm the boss until you put me in my place and show me who the real alpha is. I have worked with a behaviorist and she showed my foster mom how to be more assertive and since then I've been a really good boy. I am very smart! I know sit, paw, and down. We are working on high five! I love my 2 Boxer foster sisters and have been good with other dogs I've met. I am being fed separately right now because I do like to try to eat the other dogs food and I get a little grumpy if they don't want to share! My foster mom is working on helping me learn that this is not a good behavior. Sometimes I try to guard my toys too, but each day I realize more and more that I don't have too. I would do best in a home with either a good fence I can't escape from, or extra land where I'll have freedom to explore some without getting hurt. I am just so curious and sometimes it gets me in trouble! I don't like being alone and I absolutely do not like the crate, so please consider that if you think you may want to adopt me. Did I mention I LOVE KIDS!! I will give chase with cats, but have not hurt one. I really want them to play with me. I would do best in a home with family who will play with me, work my brain, and make sure I get plenty of exercise. I think I'm a lap dog and will curl up with my people any chance I can! I have made such progress since being saved...I just need a home where my family will understand I haven't had the best life up to now, but I promise if you give me a chance I'll love you forever and show you what a great boy I can be. In case you are wondering I am neutered and up to date on my shots, so I'm ready for my forever home today!!

Zoe
DESCRIPTION:

Zoe isn’t a bad girl, but she’s in a situation right now that is not bringing out the best in her.  She is a Shepherd mix, maybe Dutch Shepherd in the mix.

She needs to be in a home without other dogs and ONLY with adults who are very experienced working with dominant /anxiety defensive dogs, such as dog trainers or K9 officers.   NO FIRST TIME DOG OWNERS, please.

We adopted Zoe from our local shelter when she was about 6 months old, and she had been a stray.  She has lived with our other three older dogs but no cats. She loves teenaged kids, and also loves to chase squirrels and deer, but is trained to an electronic fence.

Because of her tough beginnings, she has always had fears/anxieties and defensive behavior related to food and attention.  One of our GSDs went blind this past year from SARD, and is also mostly deaf, and this has created a big issue for Zoe, who doesn’t understand that she’s not being ignored or challenged by this dog.   Zoe now feels she has to dominate the other dogs and even the humans in our house, and despite our best efforts with different dog trainers and a behavioral vet, the best solution is to rehome her where she will not feel this anxiety and fear.

Zoe is healthy, has had a recent exam with normal blood work, is up to date on all vaccinations, receives flea/tick/heartworm meds regularly, is housetrained, walks well on leash, and knows all her obedience commands.  She is very smart and learns quickly.  She is not high energy, and is happy to lie around the house, but loves to go for walks and car rides.  She’s a great girl, but needs a better situation to be happy and have a better life.

Thanks for considering Zoe!

Please contact Hal Horenberg, Home at Last Sanctuary, 301-983-0614, if you would like to start an adoption application.
