.
File a lost animal report with every shelter in your area, post lost
animal notices with a photo throughout your neighborhood, and with
local veterinarians. If you are posting notices outside make sure that
the notice says LOST ANIMALS in large enough print that it can be read
from a distance. Libraries, supermarkets, and community centers
usually have bulleting boards where you can post notices.
It is important to offer a reward - It need not be a huge reward.
Include your phone number and the phone number of the nearest animal
shelter. Do not include your name. Talk to your mail carrier,
newspaper carriers, and your neighbors to see if they have seen the
animal.
Check with all area animal shelters - and
submit a picture and description to each one.

You need to provide each shelter with detailed information about where
the animal was lost, a description of the animal, and whether or not
the animal was wearing a collar or tag. It is important that you act
quickly. Most shelters only hold stray animals for a few days.
Keep in mind that over 7 million pets are put to sleep each year in
animal shelters!
All dogs and cats should wear a collar with
an identification tag. If your animal is found and taken to any
shelter and the animal is wearing a license or identification tag that
shelter will contact you immediately. In
addition, all dogs coming into shelters or a vet's office are scanned
for a microchip - you can get your dog microchipped at your
local vet clinic and sometimes at special events sponsored by local
shelters and rescues. Click on the links below for more
information on chipping:
