Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment.
Donation receipts available upon request.
I'm beautiful to look at
And wonderful to hold, But please don't adopt me
If you wont keep me 'til I'm old.

DESCRIPTION: The Gods have indeed smiled upon this friendly, big and beautiful boy! Adonis was not in such a terrific place and the staff worked extra hard to get him to rescue. Who can resist that face? That smile? He is such a sweet dog! ;) Adonis now would love a family - a nice family this time - a home Inside and warm, with a comfy doggy bed for older bones. A person - or persons - who will love him and play with him and his beloved ball. Adonis has a special ball that was given to him by the shelter volunteers when he left to come to MAGSR. It will (hopefully survive) to come with him to his new home when he is adopted. He will need a little tweaking - some training. Training is good for man (or woman) and dog, too. It makes for happy people and nice, well behaved and happy dogs. Adonis is in a foster home with other dogs - and he gets along just fine - even with the older lady dog that tries to get that ball....no way.. :) He is not too fond of being crated - and we are working on that. :) As a senior dog, he is well past the puppy stage, but Adonis has so much spirit and life - he would fit into just about any type of family. A bit of age related creakiness - which is to be expected, but with some good food, some supplements and a nice easy exercise program, Adonis will forever be a very happy boy! If you are willing to give this boy a good, loving home for the rest of his years, please contact us to arrange to meet him.
Update: Adonis is 8 years old and I have talked with the folks who rescued him from his owners. He spent all of his life on a chain until being rescued. When he came to me he was not housebroken and never in a crate. He is now housebroken and he is not destructive. He loves kids and everybody loves other dogs. DO not know about cats as I do not have one. He is very very gentle and an absolute love sponge. Pretty sure he never got much attention before and is not always sure what to do but he loves being petted. When I leave the house I shut him in a room or the basement because he scratches at the door for a bit when we leave. He has never destroyed anything at my house and will play fetch til you drop. Loves lying around on the deck and just hanging out. Currently is one of 4 dogs and would be much better for him if he could get more attention. Most of my other fosters were more independent than he is and did not seem to need as much attention/affection as he craves but it is probably just due to the absolute lack of any in his past.
Unfortunately this sweet boy has been diagnosed with heartworm and is currently undergoing treatment.
UPDATE: Hi it's me Adonis! Just wanted to get the word out that I have finished my heartworm treatment with flying colors. I am free to take long walks, play ball or just hang out. Although I am the kennel favorite, I would really love to be in my forever home. I will fit into any home whether it be active or a family that just likes to chill out. I have been out at a couple Petsmart's looking for the perfect family. Could it by you? Ask to meet me today you won't be disappointed.
UPDATE: Hi folks, wanted to let you know I had a very good weekend spent away from the kennel. I was @ Dundalk Petsmart all day on Saturday. And I must say, I sure did love the people there, all ages and sizes. And I met a few pups I got along famously with. Also met two GSD's, that I played with for two days, it seemed like eternity, but went by too quick. I love playing with my jolley ball. If you throw it, I will chase it and bring it back to you. Being of mature age, I like to play for a while, but do need my rest. I am waiting to find my furever family. Are you out there? Can you handle a mature fellow like myself? with a heart and soul of a puppy? (a very large puppy ?) :) Can't wait to meet you.

DESCRIPTION: Meet Aro. He along with his brothers and sisters were confiscated by animal control as part of a cruelty/neglect case. They all had severe cases of sarcoptic mange (scabies). They were practically furless when they were brought in. They were all treated while residing at the shelter and then released to us. Now that they are cured their fur is growing back in. They now are well on their way to having beautiful coats.
These are babies and will require an infinite amount of patience and love, lots of old newspapers and training. Of course, training - training is so very, very important - and it can and should begin at a young age for a puppy - just as with a small human child :). A puppy is a blank slate - what you as an owner put into it is what you will get in return. Please, please do your research before you apply. Be realistic. These cute, fluffy and adorable little puppies will grow and become large dogs. Please make sure you can make a commitment to a puppy that will last throughout their lifetime. As with any puppy, they will try your patience no end - and you will spend much more money than you ever intended to spend on a dog. You will have things chewed, peed and pooped on and occasionally strange things swallowed causing frantic trips to the vet - and you will be ready to throw up your hands - many times! But is it worth it? Oh yes, absolutely! They will love you unconditionally and will be the best friend you and your children ever had for the rest of their life. We at MAGSR want to make sure that these little cuties have the best home ever. If you feel that you have what it takes to give them a forever home please contact us and we will have their foster moms get in touch with you.

DESCRIPTION: Sadly Bear along with his adopted friend Lady have been returned to us as their owner is in ill health and can no longer care for them. Unfortunately this is not the first time that Bear has found himself looking for a home and family that will commit to a lifetime of love and comfort. When Bear first came to us he was a very sick boy. He was taken to the shelter after severely injuring his tail somehow because his owner stated that the family could not afford vet care for him. His tail was so badly infected that it had to be amputated and he was pulled from the shelter and placed in a temporary "safe home" awaiting rescue. His rescuers drove many hours to get him to his MAGSR foster home. Bear was adopted in 2009 and lived in a house with teenagers and his fur friend Lady. He is handsome, sweet gentle boy that needs a place to finally rest his paws once and for all. A family that will cherish him for his lifetime, provide him with love and security. If you are that family, Bear would love to meet you.

DESCRIPTION: Beau found himself at the pound after his owner passed away with no where to live and no one to care for him As you can imagine he has been through a lot and is now looking for a new home and a new family to help him pick up the pieces and move on. In spite of all the recent changes he is a sweet, well behaved boy. Don't let his age fool you though, he is an active boy and enjoys the company of people and other dogs. Of course he will need to go to training, not only is it a requirement of ours but training also helps build a bond. The kennel staff reports that he keeps his run clean and he does very well with other dogs, cats and is gentle with children. Please consider making this sweet boy a part of your family, he will be forever grateful.
Update: Beau has been at my house for 3 days, and what a great guy!!! He has a bunch of foster siblings; 3 dogs and 2 cats. He is getting along quite well with the other dogs. One is a corgi and he seemed to display a bit of prey drive, but the corgi just herds him away if she feels bothered. He is not yet playing with the other dogs, just hanging out. One of the other dogs is quite a bit larger than he is, and the middle one (a MAGSR adoptee) is about the same size as he is. He is very respectful of their territory. He sometimes tries to chase the cats, but the cats don't really pay any attention to him, so he gets bored with that game. He has one of the sweetest disposition, very loving without being demanding. He redirects immediately, in other words, when I tell him no, he stops what he is doing right away. He is sleeping in my bedroom with the other dogs with no confrontations at all. He is very food driven and was quite eager to show me how years of experience can make him an expert counter surfer! Apparently, his former owner fed him from the table, and maybe while preparing food(we don't do that in his foster home). He will follow you everywhere if he thinks you have food. He has had some training and will sit & down on command. This dog is one of the nicest dogs I have ever met, and in spite of his age, can run with the best of them. He would make a great addition to a family as the only dog or with maybe one other dog. I think he feels quite overwhelmed being the 4th dog. He is not aggressive, not territorial, is housebroken, has had basic training, and is super sweet. What more could you ask for? This charming older gentleman would be a wonderful addition to your family.

DESCRIPTION: Hello, my name is Ben. My good friends call me Gentle Ben - and I guess it is because I am. I am not a whippersnapper - rather I am what you might call a "senior", a "mature" or "older" gentleman. I call myself a Good Old Dog! :) Seems like my life has had its ups and its downs...I have spent most of my days roughing it...mostly an outdoors type of guy; and then one day, my person gave me to a friend. I was too old, he said....he did not want me anymore. Well, she had 3 dogs of her own already and was not fond of having another mouth to feed so she gave me to a shelter. This was not a good place. It was cold and noisy and it smelled funny. It made me feel sad and scared. I got sick. A nice lady told me not to worry, that there were some people far away that would take me and get me better and I would never have to worry - I would be safe and I was going to go home. Well, you see, I had a home before and it wasn't so hot, so I really did not know what to expect. Turns out I did not have to worry about a thing. I am in a wonderful foster home. My foster mom has treated my very bad cold and I am feeling so much better. I have a warm bed and good food - and the place doesn't look half bad! :) There are other fur friends here - I have seen them in the yard, but have not met them face to face yet because I was sick. I wag my tail and let them know that I am just so anxious to meet them soon. There is an older girl who looks real sweet, a good looking younger gal who I really want to meet soon, an older gent like me that I know will be great to pal around with - maybe trade old war stories - or to play checkers or whatever with; and last there is this real skinny big dog that seems like a nice friendly fellow, too. I am very content now and starting to feel better and not so sad anymore. I love to play ball with my foster mom and she tells me that soon I will be able to go out into the yard and play with the other dogs. I can't wait! :) If you are ever around these parts, look me up. I would love to have a game of fetch - a slow game of fetch - remember, old bones - can't be too rambunctious, you know. My name is Ben, and I am very happy to be here.
UPDATE: Hi Benny here just checking in. I have been in my foster home for over a month now and I am loving being loved, cuddling and those back rubs are just heavenly! I live with 4 other shepherds and other than being a little bit slower than they are, we all get along very well. Things are laid back out here in the country which suits me just fine as I love to just lie on the deck and just watch the other race around the yard like crazy things...none of that for this distinguished senior, in my day I could have out run all of them so am content to just watch and smile and reflect on my memories. Many people pass over older dogs like me but let me tell you that senior dogs make excellent matches for those people, young and old, who can't handle the young bouncy whipper snappers. All we ask is for a little bit of exercise as that is good for anyone regardless of your age. Companionship and love are also high on our wish list but I don't know of any human who isn't looking for exactly the same thing. I walk very nicely on a leash and don't need long walks, just enough to enjoy a few new smells then back home for a snack, watch the evening news then a nap.....oh the good life! If this life style suits you too but you don't have a buddy to share it with I would be more than happy to share it with you....remember my name is Ben and I am looking for a person to keep company and love.
UPDATE: Benny, whose human age is now 89, is now suffering from painful arthritis. He has also been diagnosed with spinal stenosis which means at some point in his life he suffered disc degeneration which has caused bony spur formations to develop between each vertebrae causing "bridging" and in some cases fusing making many regular movements quite painful. Mornings and damp days are definitely his enemy and getting moving most mornings causes him to groan and complain just his elderly human counterparts do. The race to the door to go first morning potty is a challenge as Benny's absolute top race speed has been received a "slow and careful" rating. He tries so hard but on occasions just can't make it out.
We are keeping Benny comfortable with Rimydal and he is a real trooper, slowly and steadily following us around, just wanting to be part of the gang. We still playing a very limited careful version of catch and our walks are short but filled with great smells and adventure. He can no longer do steps, utilizes a ramp outside and waits patiently for us to return to the first floor inside. Benny is only a little guy and we would gladly carry him up to be with us but the pressure on or the twisting of his spine only causes him more discomfort. This sometimes grumpy little senior guy with a fondness for snacking on leather, is always at the door to greet me when I get home from work. I am always greeted with a big doggy smile and as wagging his tail hurts, the few wags I do get mean the world to me. We will continue to adjust our lives and the house to accommodate his limitations and he will continue to be loved and include in everything we do as that is his wish.

Description: Braxxton is a wonderful mature guy! He has spent a good deal of time behind those kennel bars in the shelter and it is time to break out and find himself a permanent brand new place to live! Braxxton was not dealt the best hands in life. His early days were not in the best of homes and he was not treated well. However, after landing in the shelter, some time ago, he charmed the shelter staff (mostly ladies) :) - He IS a ladies man! He had them wrapped around his paw...and begged every day for them to find him another place to go...time was running out for him and life was becoming shorter and scarier. Braxxton is now here with us, and we are dedicated to find him that wonderful home he so deserves. Braxxton is very smart and outgoing and active and playful - for a middle aged gent, he can get around just fine, thank you! He is fine with kids - older only because he may inadvertently knock over the little tykes. He loves to go for walks and has very good leash manners....he loves to smell and just enjoy the scenery. Braxxton will require that his new people take him to training. He is looking forward to it - and it will help him to solidify that bond that is so necessary for owners and dogs. A home with a breed knowledgeable owner/handler that is familiar with German Shepherds is absolutely required...and a fenced yard would be wonderful, too. He can't wait to show how smart he is! Braxxton is a pretty mellow fellow - not a jumper, he is a lover and a thinker! He does love the ladies! Come on up and meet this great guy! He is waiting now to look you over and check you out. :) If you would like to meet Braxxton, please contact us to arrange a time to meet him.

Description: Brody is a mature and beautiful German Shepherd that has not had a very easy life up to now apparently. He is indeed a diamond in the rough! Brody's family was moving and he had to go. Brody has been an outside dog his whole life. He has no idea how to behave like a well behaved dog should. He is big and strong and has no manners whatsoever. None. Nada. Zilch. It will be starting from ground zero with Brody. Brody will need a very breed experienced and strong owner/handler who should commit to a dedicated training program to help this strong willed and stubborn boy become a wonderful family member. Brody is a very handsome and a good looking boy - and he is smart! :) Brody has has a hard life and does deserve to spend the rest of his years with a family that can work with him to bring this boy to his full potential. Training with this boy will go a long way to help him feel secure in himself and to look to his people as leaders. If you feel that you have the "right stuff" for Body, please contact us to arrange a meeting.

DESCRIPTION: Bubba was turned into the shelter because he chases cars. I guess it never occurred to his former owner to keep him in a fenced yard. Bubba had never in all his five years been to a vet and was not neutered - so he might have chased more than just cars. :) MAGSR has taken care of his vetting and we did have him neutered so his wandering days should be over at last. Now he can settle down to the business at hand - finding himself a proper home --one with a fenced in yard and hopefully no cars speeding about! Bubba has had no training and is a bit of a free spirit. He will need to learn correct deportment when in the company of other dogs - and also people. He will need to be in a committed training program with his new family. This is absolutely required for adoption of this beautiful boy. Bubba is quite friendly and looking for affection. He is also smart, stubborn and will take over your life, become unmanageable and overly protective if you let him. A good training program takes care of that and is essential for the owner as well as the dog. Bubba, (how can you not like that name?), Bubba is waiting for his new lease on life! If you can give him a foster home while he waits for the perfect family, that would be ideal. Please ask to meet this handsome boy! He is waiting to shake your paw! Bubba. Remember the name.

UPDATE: Cauis is doing great. He is pretty much house broken. As long as you can read his signals. He has put on lots of weight as you can see by his new pictures on the additional pic's on the web. He plays well with kids and other dogs. He is crate trained, as long as he gets out every couple of hours. For the first time he rode in a crate to the Walk for the Paws without throwing up...He is a sweet, loving puppy. Very alert, not timid or afraid. Will pull things off the coffee table if you aren't watching. Would love to have a stay at home mom with kids for him to go to. That would be ideal.. He is a good medium energy level. Quiet in his kennel. And sleeps all night without a sound.

As a puppy his leg was accidentally slammed in the tail gate of truck for which he had never received medical treatment.

This is from an injury he suffered as a puppy when the tail gate of a truck was slammed on him, for which he never received medical care. DESCRIPTION: Elmo has lived in a foster home for many months. He was part of a litter that was discarded and then found. They were taken to a pound and some of his siblings went to foster, some stayed at the pound. Elmo was then taken in by a foster who integrated him into her home and family pack. He has had a rough beginning and he does deserve a break. He is a sweet, smart and cute little guy. He looks like a mini-shepherd and has a very winning personality. Elmo is, however, not without a few quirks to this personality. Elmo is a typical mouthy puppy who thinks he is a very big boy! He needs to learn some social skills, needs some structure and consistency and training - training big time. Elmo is now with MAGSR and in another foster home. His foster will update with new information about Elmo from time to time -- and some new pictures, too.
UPDATE: Elmo is settling in now after his first week. He is such a sweet loveable pup! He loves to run around with his foster sister, chase balls and play with the neighborhood dogs while on walks. He is housebroken and is getting great with basic commands like sit, stay and heel. He is a energetic, happy little guy that is looking forward to finding his perfect forever home that is committed to training and giving him all the love he deserves!
UPDATE: Elmo is now at the kennel and it is very, very apparent that he needs a home. Elmo is a shy and very anxious young man and he is not at all comfortable with the noise and constant commotion of a kennel. This little guy has had a horrible beginning and needs a very, special home - a permanent home - but in the meantime that foster home would work wonders for him. Elmo needs to learn to trust. He needs confidence. And he needs someone special to work out all those fears and quirks and little things that make this cute guy so fearful. It will take time, lots of time, and patience; but it will be so worth it. Elmo is a great dog. Once Elmo is comfortable with a person, which means he will allow you to approach and touch him, he will gradually begin to come to that person readily seeking affection. He can be very affectionate. Elmo does well with other dogs, as leaders, and will follow their lead. He is housebroken, crate trained and knows sit and down. He's a smart, albeit confused, little guy that seems to want to be near people but doesn't have the trust component at the present time to allow it. We do not know what demons in the past still haunt him, but we do know that with over time with love and patience, these memories and demons will disappear and, as a result some lucky person will have a very loyal and loving companion. If you believe that you have what it takes to help this boy become all that he can be, :) -- please, please do contact us to make arrangements to meet Elmo.
UPDATE: Hello from Elmo's new foster mommy! Elmo has been with us for about two weeks now and is doing great! The kennel was clearly the wrong place for this little guy, too stressful. He gets along great with his foster fur-siblings (one male, one female) and loves to wrestle with them and shares toys nicely. It's clear he's had a rough time in the past and is learning to trust people. It is clear that he wants to trust us, he loves to cuddle and gives lots of kisses when he feels the time is right. He is in training to help build his confidence and we see improvement every day. He doesn't like a lot of commotion, so a calm home would probably be best for him. This little guy is a great pet and will make some forever family very happy!
Elmo will only be placed in an experienced home.

DESCRIPTION: Meet Quil, Sam, Jacob, Embry, Leah and Emily. These little cuties ended up at a shelter and are now looking for their furever homes. Sam is the pack leader and insists all the other pack members follow his lead. He is extremely sweet when it comes to his little Emily - it’s as if it’s his job to take care of her. Emily is the smallest but within time she’ll be taking care of Sam’s pack for sure. Jacob is transforming into quite the leader himself - he is quick and some say he can “phase on the fly”. Quil and Embry are very good little eaters. If it was up to them, they wouldn’t leave any food for the rest of the pack. Leah stands her ground with her brothers and doesn’t let them get away with pushing her around.
As with any puppy, they will try your patience no end - and you will spend much more money than you ever intended to spend on a dog, you will have things chewed, peed and pooped on and occasionally strange things swallowed and frantic trips to the vet - and you will be ready to throw up your hands - many times! But is it worth it? Oh yes, absolutely! They will love you unconditionally and will be the best friend you and your children ever had for the rest of their life. We at MAGSR want to make sure that these little cuties have the best home ever. If you feel that you have what it takes to give that home please contact us and we will have their foster moms get in touch with you.
These cuties will be ready for adoption starting September 8, 2010.

DESCRIPTION: This sweet and gentle mature man has lost his way and apparently lost his home. He was picked up as a stray and no one came forward to claim him, although he did have on a collar, there were no tags and no chip...so he was not in a good place when MAGSR stepped in...and this is a shame. Gatlin is a nice guy - he could really use a home and some friends right now. It is so hard to understand how a dog his age could be missing and no one missed him enough so he ends up in a shelter with his life on the line. Hard as it may be to comprehend, it happens. Now Gatlin was obviously "someone's dog"; but it is not known if he was an inside or outside dog - or if he spent his time in both places. This nice gent has manners, walks ok on the leash and simply charms every one he meets. Gatlin was taken to the vets to have his vaccines updated, get some tests run and to be neutered. During his examination he was found to be in kidney failure - the early stages of renal disease and will need a special diet and maybe some medication for the rest of his years. The prognosis is very good and there is no reason why this nice dog cannot enjoy his remaining years in the company of a loving home. Gatlin will make a wonderful companion. He is definitely not a crazy pup. He is a dignified and majestic German Shepherd - and he looks it. Gatlin is at the vet's office now and could really use a foster home. Please give this boy a second chance. He deserves it. Gatlin is waiting - please contact us to arrange a meeting.
Update: Gatlin is housebroken, weighs between 55 - 60 lbs (probably his ideal size), and is good with cats. (Don't know about kids, but he is pretty much good with anything.) Gatlin LOVES to go for walks and is not bad on the leash, although he needs more work. He cannot get too much attention. He would climb in your lap and let you pet him all night. I think he'd be great for someone who is more low-key, but he also likes activity. He is pushy for attention, but is in general not a dominant dog. He doesn't back down from a confrontation, though, even with his much larger siblings. (No major fights, just quarrels.) He isn't too interested in toys but really likes chewing on bones. He tries to eat Frosty Paws cup and all, so I definitely have to scoop it out and give it to him in a dish. He can be a pest about begging for food. Most of all, he is a real sweetheart who just wants love.

DESCRIPTION: As Heinz is new to us and has been through a horrific ordeal we are just learning about him. We will post updates on him and his medical plight. A desperate plea was sent out for a mutilated GSD mix in dire need of rescue. Heinz was found wondering around in very bad shape. His ear was partially cut off, his tail was cut off and he was blinded. When the animal control officers were finally able to catch him it was noted that his wounds were infested with maggots. We at MAGSR, with the very generous and kind support of many people were able to take this loving and gentle boy into rescue. Heinz will be seen by specialists to see if his ear can be reattached and if there is anything that can be done to restore some if not all of his eyesight. Heinz will have the comfort, love and care of a foster home. Helping dogs like Heinz is only made possible by your generous donations, please help us help Heinz. Thank you for your support, we cannot do it without you.
Update: Heinz had surgery to reattach as much of his ear as possible. The Vets are hopeful that his body will accept the reattachment which took 30 stitches to repair. He will be seen by the vets every few days to have the ear checked and bandages changed. Upon his initial exam it was noted that one of his teeth was black. During surgery they were better able to exam his teeth and found that he had sustained injury to his front teeth. While they do not feel his teeth are causing him any pain at this time, this is something that will be dealt with once he has recovered from his ear surgery.
Heinz was also seen by the Eye Specialist. It was found that he is not completely blind. He has no vision in his left eye, but he does have some vision in the right eye. This is due thickened corneas and scarring for which nothing can be done. He does get around on his own pretty well, also using his nose and following sounds. In spite of all that Heinz has had to endure in life he is one of the sweetest and most loving dogs, everyone that has met him fell in love immediately. We at MAGSR along with Heinz thank all of his very generous donors and followers, we could not have done this without each and everyone of you.
Heinz has only been with me for a few days now but he has made great strides. He is crate trained and seems to be housebroken. He has had limited interactions with my dogs due to his injuries but seems to enjoy their company. The resident Shepherd and his foster sister stay by his crate, it is amazing how dogs know when they are needed to provide comfort. He has a good appetite and is eating some much needed good quality food and boiled chicken with rice. He has an incredible spirit and lots of love to give. He enjoys cuddling, being petted and loved on. Heinz will be a loyal and loving companion for a very lucky family.
Update: Sorry it has been a while since I updated, but I have been busy exploring, going for long walks (mom says something about working on my leash manners) and playing with my fur friends here at my foster home. I am really loving life here, there is so much to do, lots of smells, plenty of good food and water, and a tremendous amount of love. This is kind of embarrassing, but heck I will tell you anyway. My foster dad loves to carry me around swaddled like a baby in his arms. I just lay back in his arms enjoying my very own cuddle time.
Oh the best news yet, well at least I think it is. I no longer am sporting that silly thing around neck that my foster mom called my party hat. One day I decided enough was enough and pulled it right off all by myself, aren't I smart. Mom said as long as I did not scratch my ear that I could keep it off, she said something about not wanting me to ruin my very expensive ear repair. Mom also gave me a get out of jail free card, when she is home I get to stay out of my crate and hang with the big dogs. It is so much fun as I get to run around and play with my fur buddies. Remember I told you all about the funny looking fur dude that lives here with the smooshy face, well Mom and Dad told me that from our back end we look like twins, something about our tails looking the same. Well from the rear we may look the same, but from the front I have to say I am much more handsome. I mean really he looks like he forgot to put on the brakes and ran into a tree. I am going to have my stitches out next week, I can't wait as they are kinda itchy. Once my stitches are out Mom tells me that I will be ready to meet my adoring public in search of my forever home and family. She told me that MAGSR will be sure to find a family where I will never be treated badly again. I sure hope so, because I am really enjoying living the good life. Well gotta run, I see my buddy curled up on the comfy bed and there is a spot right beside him with my name on it.
Night night,
Heinz
Update: Oh I could not wait to share this exciting news. My stitches were removed from my ear today and everyone says it looks great. Wow, does it feel good to have them out and because I was such a good boy when they removed them I got lots and lots of ear scratches from everyone at the Vets office and of course from my foster mom. Now I do not have to listen to my foster mom say "Heinz stop scratching your ear", "Heinz stop shaking your head", "Heinz stop wrestling with your brothers" now I can do whatever I want. Dad tells me I am famous, he saw a MAGSR license tag on a car in DC so he started talking to the nice lady and she knew all about me, can you believe that, wow do I feel special. Thank you to everyone that kept me in their thoughts and prayers and donated towards the cost of my care, I never knew that humans could be so kind. Well, Mom tells me now that I am better I can meet my adoring public, so watch the events calender to see where I'll be and come out to meet me. I am now taking appointments for anyone who might be interested in adopting a very cute, full of life, loving little famous fella.

DESCRIPTION: I write this with tears in my eye's as it breaks my heart to know that a human could be so cruel. Isen, a sweet, loving, full of kisses, innocent 16 week old puppy was kicked so hard by his former owner that he actually kicked him off the deck and part way across the yard. Isen whimpered in pain as he was transported to the specialist. Isen is having surgery to repair the damage to his leg. His femur has a severe break, the bone is actually smashed and splintered. The specialist feels that his former owner had to have had very heavy boots on to inflict this type of injury. Isen will require a plate to repair the leg. He will be on 6 weeks of strict crate rest, and a number of daily exercises to keep the leg muscle from growing over the knee joint. This is an expensive surgery, but one that MAGSR could not deny this sweet bundle of fur. Donations towards Isen's care are greatly appreciated. It is due to your generosity that we are able to continue to save the lives of so many dogs in need. Thank you for your kind support. Check back for updates and new pictures.
UPDATE: Isen had surgery on 9/23/10 to repair the damage to his leg. A plate was used to secure the femur. He is now resting comfortably in our care at his foster home. He requires 6 weeks of crate rest with only short potty walks. He also needs to have his leg iced 5 times a day and exercised numerous times a day to keep the leg from healing improperly. As Isen grows there is a chance that at some point he may require further surgery to remove the plate, but this is not known for sure. Isen is doing well with his crate rest and recovery. He has had no accidents in his crate, is quiet and calm in his crate and sleeps through the night. He enjoys being cuddled and seems starved for affection, which he now is receiving lots of. He has met the 3 resident dogs and the other foster dog (Heinz) that resides in his foster home. He enjoys their company, giving kisses when they approach him. When first meeting strange people or dogs he will bark and wow does he have a big bark, but once he knows he is safe he settles down. He will return to have his staples removed in 2 weeks and in 6 weeks to have x-rays done to be sure the leg has healed before being released from crate rest.

DESCRIPTION: Greivis and his brother Holden were pulled from a shelter in the nick of time. They are now safe in our care, ready to start their lives with a new family. They are a little unsure of things right now as they have been through a lot of changes in the last couple of days. Once they feel safe with their person they bond very quickly and start to play and act the way puppies should. If you are considering adding a puppy to your family please be sure to do your homework first. Puppies are a lot of work, they get into things, chew on things and have accidents in the house. They are blank slates ready and willing to learn all that it takes to be a good member of your family, but this will take time, patience and training on your part. If you have room in your heart and home to offer one of these cute babies at second chance at life, please contact us to arrange a meeting.

DESCRIPTION: Hey! Kaden, here! Yes, over here!!! Man, I don't know where I was before, but it sure was a scary place! People were ok, but it was noisy and there were dogs barking -- whew! Am I glad I got outta there! :) Nice people did take care of me. They said that someone would be coming soon to take me to a safe place; and sure enough, this very nice man came and gave me a biscuit and put me in his car....it had a nice blanket that smelled like other dogs so I knew it was a safe place. He told me that he was going to make sure I would find a great home where I would have a soft bed, lots of good food and water and some people who would love me forever and never let me go hungry or without a home again. So where am I now? Well, I think it is some kind of hospital.....they said I needed to have some "vetting" and "neutering" before I could meet my future forever. I am not sure what that is, but I know that it should be ok, right? I mean, in no time at all I will be ready to find my family -- I am what they would call a "diamond in the rough". I don't have much in the way of doggy education or learnin', am a bit of a wild child, but I am smart and will be very eager to pick up this traning. Anything to please my new family! I think a mom and dad and maybe a boy or girl to play with would be just wonderful! Hey! I should be all set to meet you soon. Ask to meet Kaden - the handsome one with the smile! :)
Kaden will only be placed in an experienced home.

DESCRIPTION: Kaiser is our big, beautiful boy that is now back with us and in search of a good home again. Kaiser will need a special home - one that has a very strong handler/owner and will absolutely need a commitment to an approved training program for a minimum of one year. He is a typical Shepherd; - loyal, intelligent, majestic and beautiful. However, he is more than just a pretty face; Kaiser is most likely smarter than you are. He will try to take over the leadership role in the household if he feels that it is necessary because the rules and boundaries are not set and followed. Make no mistake, this beautiful dog, once a skinny, malnourished stray from the "Beach" in Puerto Rico, is every inch a German Shepherd - and will look for his pack leader to take charge. Kaiser is housebroken, trained in basic obedience, and will make the right family a wonderful, loyal and true lifelong companion. He needs to be confident in his leaders - that's it. Without this Kaiser will become over protective and will attempt to take over. We would recommend a home with no children, or children over 16 years, and no cats or small furry pets such as guinea pigs or bunnies. If you feel that you have what it takes and can commit to a training program, have definite breed experience and are a strong handler and leader - if you believe that you can do justice to this beautiful dog and would like to meet him for consideration into your family - your pack, please contact us to arrange a meeting.
Update: Kaiser has come along way, when he was returned to us Kaiser felt that he was the leader of the pack which was not a good thing for him or his handlers. With daily obedience Kaiser now understands that he is not in charge and respects those that can assume the role of leader. Kaiser has been staying with one of our trainers for the last few months. During his stay he has been in daily obedience training and has made great strides. It will be a requirement of anyone wishing to meet Kaiser that they attend the training facility where he is currently residing. His trainer would like to be very sure that anyone interested in Kaiser is a strong and knowledgeable dog handler. Even though Kaiser is obedience trained it will be required that his new family continue training with him. You see Kaiser is a very intelligent boy that looks for strong leadership, without this he feels he must take on the role of leader. It is never a good thing when a dog becomes the leader of the pack as this is when they can become hard to handle. With the right family and strong leadership Kaiser feels secure and trusts his people which makes him more relaxed and a true joy to be with. If you think you have what it takes to be the pack leader set up an appointment to meet Kaiser. You will be amazed with how handsome and intelligent he is.

DESCRIPTION: Karl is one of those terribly sad sad cases that can break your heart. An animal control officer spotted him digging through garbage looking for food; he watched him stumble and fall. Karl was so weak that the officer had to pick him up and lift him into his truck. Everyone at the shelter was touched by this dog's sweet and gentle nature and turned to MAGSR to help him. In his extremely poor condition there would be no alternative but for the shelter to euthanize this dog. Not many rescues or adopters would want an older dog in such poor shape but we at MAGSR could not turn our back on this sweet old guy.
Karl is so horrifically thin that every rib and every vertebrae in his back is visible. His hair is patchy and very sparse, and he is so weak from prolonged starvation he can barely stand. He is literally a walking skeleton. As starved as he is and as hungry as he must have been, he will still take treats very gently and carefully.
Karl's condition at this time is very fragile, He is still so extremely weak that at this time we do not know if he will recover from what appears to be prolonged starvation and obvious serious neglect. However, we are making sure that he will spend his time from now on with people who will envelope him with love and care while making sure he is never hungry or cold again. In spite of all the horror that he has been through, Karl is a sweet and dignified gentleman with gentle and soulful eyes.
We will keep his page updated with new pictures and continuing news of his progress.
If you would like to help Karl or help MAGSR to help others like him, please consider sponsoring him and his friends here at MAGSR.
Update: We are so very pleased to report that Karl is looking and feeling better, day by day. His coat is filling in and becoming thicker, he looks less worried and he has gained almost 20 pounds! However even with somewhat improved muscle tone - (he had NONE) - he is still very wobbly in his hind end and his back legs. He has trouble standing and his back legs will just give out on him from time to time. Because of this, we decided to take him to one of our orthopedic specialists for an opinion and possibly a diagnosis, a prognosis and hopefully a plan of action.
During the examination, gentle and dignified Karl was truly a gentleman and endured all that pinching, poking, stretching, manipulating and prodding like he knew that he was really being helped......not a peep, not a scowl or a growl; Karl is a gem! The results of the examination were inconclusive. Karl's weaknesses can be attributed to a number of reasons: The signals from his brain are not getting through to his hind legs well enough to keep them coordinated and behaving like back legs should! Karl does get embarrassed a little when his front end and his back end do end up going separate ways and he kerplunks on his kisser! :) The only way to narrow down what is wrong is for our brave warrior to have an MRI. We are making arrangements now to take Karl for his MRI. This is not an inexpensive procedure and will put an additional burden on MAGSR's already stretched and depleted medical funds.
MAGSR and Karl are grateful to each and every one who has contributed to his rehabilitation in the past and are continuing to do so. He would never had had a chance before to know human kindness and love. He has come so far! His foster mom loves him and cooks special meals for him each day! He is still skinny and wobbly, but his eyes tell it all. :) Those beautiful, kind and soulful eyes thank you...and will continue to thank you. Please help us again to help Karl and his friends here at MAGSR. These wonderful, beautiful dogs rely on our kindness and compassion. Please, please continue to support Karl and his friends through our medical fund. We at MAGSR truly cannot do what we do without the financial support of all our friends. Karl sends his love. :)
Update: Well, Karl has had his MRI, and the results show that Karl's spine is a ticking time bomb. He has two bad discs in the middle of his back which are causing the nerve impulses not to transmit clearly to his back legs, thus causing him to be so unstable. It isn't just a matter of his being wobbly, if these discs rupture which could happen in a year, a month or tomorrow, he will be paralyzed. It is obvious that it is painful for Karl when he turns a certain way, and while his weight gain in one way was great for him, that same weight is now putting an additional strain on his back and those two bad discs -- which is why he is now even more unsteady. Karl will definitely require surgery. The prognosis with surgery is good with hopefully noticeable improvement. The point of the surgery would not be to improve his mobility, it would be to prevent rupture and paralysis while maintaining the mobility that he has now with the hopes of eventually improving it. Karl's surgery will cost between $2,400 and $3,600 and his recovery time will consist of about 6 months. Once again, we at MAGSR express our gratitude to all that have, and to those that will continue to support Karl and his friends through our medical fund.. Each and every one of you have our heartfelt thanks. There is no way these expensive procedures can be done without your kindness and generosity. We cannot help the dogs without you! Thank you! Karl sends his love! :)
Update: Karl has certainly come a long way since he was found amidst the garbage and taken into the shelter with not much hope for survival. Skinny, scrawny, Karl! . He has beat it all - well most of it anyway. :) Karl is one handsome dude right now! He has gained enough weight and grown enough beautiful hair so that he now resembles the most handsome of German Shepherds, thank you very much! He has survived his surgeries, has been recently neutered and aside from a little wobble when he walks, he is A-OK. He will require some physical therapy - but will do fine with a loving mom or dad by his side. This gentle giant with the beautiful, soulful eyes thanks everyone that helped him.....without your help he would not be here today. Karl is now ready to go home! Please contact us to arrange to meet him.

DESCRIPTION: Lakota is a big and beautiful boy that has been returned to us and is currently on the look out for a home. Lakota becomes nervous and uneasy around small children and because of this we recommend that he go to a home with no or older children only. Lakota is comfortable in a home, has lived with a family, is housebroken and loves going for walks, and in general, loves being a family dog. An owner familiar and experienced with the breed and committed to taking this beautiful dog through a recommended training program is required. Although he is currently well trained and very obedient, we require that both the dog and his owner go through a training regimen to cement the bond that is necessary for both the dog and his new family. Lakota is a dog just entering his golden years and he deserves a good home. He is mature, but not quite the fuddy-duddy type of older dog; Lakota is in his prime - :) - this dog has many active years left. He will make some lucky family an awesome, loving and loyal companion. Is Lakota the dog for you? Please contact us and we will arrange a meeting.
UPDATE: Lakota is a great playful boy. He loved the last recent snow and likes to catch snowballs in his mouth. He loves to go for long walks and enjoys a nice jog. He would make a great jogging partner. Although Lakota would benefit from training with his new owners to create a bond he is already trained in English and German. He is a remarkable dog that will easily adjust into a new home. He recently came in contact with a cat that did hiss at him and he showed no reaction. Please ask to see this handsome boy today.
UPDATE: Hi, it's me Lakota. I am now in foster and having a great time. What a relief! I am getting along well with my two fur-sisters and I am also doing very well with a kitty. I have been showing them what a gentleman I am. I am fully house trained and ask politely when I need to go outside. My foster Mom bought me a new squeaky football and a Wubba Wubba. I love to go for walks and am very well behaved. I have been practicing both my English & German commands. I still don't like to be hugged, so please don't hug me. I get a little uneasy when crowded. I am good in my crate because it is all mine. My foster mom taught me a new command " kennel". I also take treats nicely and eat along with my fur-sisters. My foster Dad thinks I am a handsome fellow and my foster mom says I am very smart. She tells me I am a good little soldier. I guess because I take corrections so easily. Please give me a call for a date. I'm a little old fashioned, I don't mind if you take the lead.
UPDATE: Hi Lakota here just an update to let everyone know I have so much fun playing "Hide and Go Seek" with my foster mom. I still enjoy my toys . We go for rides in the car and go for long walks on nature trails, and in the neighborhood. I am making friends with all my neighbors. They give me treats, YUM. You know they say " a way to a man's heart is through his stomach" I agree. I met a 10 yr old girl that I am acknowledging when she calls my name. I now let my foster mommy hug and kiss me. I still require getting to know you first before I give you my heart. I told you I was old fashioned.

DESCRIPTION: Meet Marcus.
UPDATE: Marcus has grown quite a bit since he came to live with me and his hair has all grown back. He is one cute fellow. A typical puppy who will get into everything, and is now tall enough to attempt counter surfing. He is, however, beginning to learn big doggie manners. He sits on command and can finally take a treat from my fingers without taking the fingers too!! He is learning to come when called and this week will start learning the "down" command. When he first arrived he was so frantic around food that I had to feed him first (in his crate, of course) because he would jump all over me while I prepared the food for the 4 dogs, then jump right into the larger dog's bowls to get their food. Now he sits nicely while I prepare the food and when he sees I am ready to give it out, he goes to his crate and waits his turn. He has 5 foster siblings, 2 large dogs (German Shepherd mixes) 1 smaller dog (Cardigan Welsh Corgi) and 2 cats. He gets along very well with everyone. He plays with all of the dogs, but his favorite is the Corgi and they just have the best time running and wrestling. He leaves the cats alone and doesn't try to chase them unless they run. He hasn't met a person he doesn't like. He is still working on housebreaking, but making progress everyday. He is crate trained and stays in his crate while I am at work and at night. In addition to all the puppy antics, he is a very sweet and loveable little guy who loves hugs & kisses and will bond with his person or people. He will make a wonderful addition to most any family

DESCRIPTION: Poncho's owner tragically lost his life in an automobile accident. Poncho had been by his owners side since he was a puppy, they were constant companions and the best of friends. Poncho is understandably very confused right now and grieving the loss of the only person he has ever shared his life with. We have been told that Poncho enjoys the company of people and often played with the neighbors dogs a Lab and a tiny dog that would come through the fence to see him. Poncho is now looking for a family that will have the time and patience to help him move on and settle into a new life. Training is a requirement with all of our dogs, something that Poncho will benefit from greatly as this will help Poncho build a lifelong bond with his new family. Do you have room in your heart, home and family for this broken hearted boy? Please ask to meet Poncho, sit awhile, pet him lovingly and get to know him better.

These are babies and will require an infinite amount of patience and love, lots of old newspapers and training. Of course, training - training is so very, very important - and it can and should begin at a young age for a puppy - just as with a small human child :). DESCRIPTION: Description: Hi, Ranger here. I am so happy to be with MAGSR, what a change in living environment, for the better of course. You see my previous family got me as a puppy and for some reason thought I should live outside tied on a chain, I of course did not think this was such a great idea. But I made the best of it, and lived that way for the last 2 years. My family has a little dog that would come out to play with me, I enjoyed it very much and got along with him very well. Then one day my family decided they could not longer care for me and decided I deserved a better life. When I met the 2 nice people from MAGSR that came to see me I was scared so I barked at them. Luckily they saw past my barking and saw me for the good boy I am.
I am gentle taking treats, did well meeting other dogs both large and small and love being petted. They did show me some cats, I barked at them too, so not sure if I like them or not. I would love to have a forever family that will take me to training, provide me with a comfortable bed, good food, lots of love and promise to never make me live outside again. Why not ask to meet me, I will show you how wonderful I am.

Description: Remi and his housemate, Asia, were returned to us when their owner suddenly passed away. They had lived all their lives with this person, adopted as puppies; and in a very short time have had their lives turned upside down. Both dogs are adjusting very well considering the circumstances.. They are nice sweet senior dogs and love people, get along with dogs and are, or course, very comfortable in a home setting. We at MAGSR would like to return them to a settled home as quickly as we can. A kennel - although better than the alternative - is no place for an older dog. Remi is a hoot and the younger of the two. He still has a lot of vim and vigor, although his bones are starting to be a bit creaky - which is to be expected in a senior dog. Remi could really use a home - a nice soft bed, some good supplements and loving care in his golden years. He is a handsome "mature" man! Gets along with other dogs. Has a smile for everyone! He is very friendly, loves to be petted and loved on and promises to be a "good boy" for his new forever home. He would like good food - needs to trim down a bit :) - a few walks every day to keep the old bones moving nicely, and quiet time with his folks; he listens very well - you can tell him all your secrets! Remi is is waiting now for another chance at life. He is definitely a "people dog" and a family is what will complete him. He would like to live his golden years with a family again. A foster home while he is waiting would be wonderful! Ask to meet Remi and shake his paw. He will give you a shake, hand you the leash and be your best pal forever! :)

DESCRIPTION: Ricochet was out wondering the streets all on his own, no comfy beds, no daily meals, no love and no care. All that has changed now that he is resting his weary paws with us. Regardless, he still would love to have a home and family of his very own with lots of love. He is a laid back kinda boy and would make a great new family member. He would love to go to training with his new family, a requirement of ours which not only teaches good doggy manners but also helps build a bond, he will be an excellent student. Put Ricochet on your list of dogs to meet.

DESCRIPTION: Well, what to say about Rio? Rio is a walking skeleton; 35 to 40 pounds underweight. He is also one of the sweetest, gentlest dogs we have come across in quite a while. Rio is not young. He is over 7 years and considered a senior. Every one of those years for him have not been kind. He has the careworn look of a dog that has seen much and been through more, and has still maintained the dignity and the presence of the German Shepherd. He has fly bitten ears - indicative of a dog left outside or kept outside. His teeth are worn and he has a few missing - again indicating either abuse, trauma or biting at a wire kennel for a long period of time. Rio is deaf. Rio is also heartworm positive, a condition so easily prevented with just a simple pill once a month, but unfortunately his previous owners were negligent in this regard also. It has been a hard life for this boy. Yet, he is beautiful - inside and out. Irregardless of the bony body and the ears - he is a beautiful dog. He has big, liquid brown eyes that look right through you and are hopeful. Seeing Rio for the first time now may bring tears to your own eyes. But Rio, you can tell has hopes for a bright future and is very happy to be where he is. He is exactly where he should be now. He has been rescued in the true sense of the word. He has a challenge ahead of him with his physical condition, and a long road ahead of him, but we will take one day at a time and are confident that you will see an absolutely stunning dog, with shiny fur and bright eyes, all better and waiting for his forever home soon.
Rio is with a temporary foster right now - soon to move to a more permanent foster home. He will have excellent care. Rio also joins his other MAGSR friends in rescue who are heartworm positive; Henry, Cindy, Caleb, Thor, Everett and Elliott - for a total of 7 dogs now in the rescue who are heartworm positive!! Please help us to help these beautiful dogs who are afflicted with heartworm through no fault of their own. MAGSR is under a severe financial strain now because of the medical expenses we now have for all of our medical needs dogs. We have always taken the very best care of our dogs, and with your help we can continue to do so. Won't you please contribute to our Medical Fund and help us to help Rio and his friends?
Update: Rio has come a long way and has been given the okay to do as he pleases. His foster mom has been talking him to the dog park and he loves every minute of it. He is one social guy. He has met dogs of all sizes along with puppies and has been nothing other then a perfect gentleman. He is starving for human attention and soaks up as much as he can. If you have a place in your heart and home for this wonderful boy please ask to see him today. He so much deserves a loving forever home.

Description: Tucker is a cute little guy with a few quirks....He is a little nervous and timid - especially around men initially, but warms up quickly. He is friendly and sweet and loving once you gain his confidence and have his trust. Tucker is very, very eager to please and is looking forward for the opportunity to show his people just what a great guy he can be. Tucker has separation anxiety, SA, and this means that he becomes nervous, anxious, and afraid that his people or person will never return for him when left alone. Dogs that have this condition are usually from a stressful situation in some way - maybe a shelter or a home that was in some way not providing the dog with the security that he must have. It is a stressful condition - not easy for either owners or the dog, but it can be resolved with time and patience and lots and lots of love, and training. Taking Tucker to training will help him by giving him structure and provide the discipline and consistency that has been lacking in his life so far. It will help to establish a bond between his people and himself and give him the confidence he needs to face his fear of being abandoned again. It will take time and it is not easy - for the dog and for the owner. The owner must have that commitment to the dog - and the dog will know and feel this and respond accordingly. We feel that his pup is worth having a second chance. Can you give it to him? Tucker would really benefit from a home where there is someone around for most of the day. He is crossing his paws and hoping and hoping! :) If you feel that you have what it takes to give this dog a stable and loving home from now on, please do contact us. Tucker is waiting to meet you

DESCRIPTION: "Wombley" is one of Heidi's pups, all of which are another case of inexcusable neglect. Wombley was born and lived outside until MAGSR rescued him, his mom and siblings. Wombley is not only under weight, he is almost hairless due to Sarcoptic Mange (scabies). His body is covered in sores and he itches all over. Obviously something that has been left untreated for some time. Well, Wombley's life is forever changed. Wombley along with his mother Heidi and his siblings are resting comfortably at the Vets where they are being treated for mange. The vet staff is providing this wonderful family with exceptional care and love. Two of our volunteers also go to visit this family a number of times a week. The puppies now get excited and know when they see them that they are going to enjoy time outside being loved on. Once Heidi and her puppies are completely recovered they will be up for adoption and looking for a family that will commit to a life time of care, love and comfort. Donations towards the cost of Heidi and her puppies care is greatly appreciated. |
