non-MAGSR & Shelter Dogs Available for Adoption

The following listings show LOCAL available GSD or GSD mixes that are being surrendered by their owners or placed by their fosters.

This page is NOT for the 'selling' of dogs.

If you have inquired about any dog listed on this page and been asked for an "adoption fee" of any kind, that is not clearly stated in the listing, please contact us immediately at web@magsr.org and let us know.  As a dog rescue organization, we advocate rescue adoptions only.  In Addition, and for the same reasons, we require that all dogs listed on this page be spayed/neutered as a condition of their adoption.

These dogs are not part of the MAGSR program; we have not evaluated any of these dogs.  We list them here because they are special and deserve a second look - - and a second chance.  For more information on any of these dogs, please contact the listed party, not MAGSR.

If you'd like to have your dog posted here, please follow the instructions at this link. Donations are appreciated!

Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment. If you aren't prepared to work with your dog through the adjustment period and beyond, please look no further. If you wont keep your dog if you move or as your family grows, please look no further. If you aren't prepared to nurse your dog back to health if he gets ill or if she needs surgery, please look no further.

Rescue dogs have been through so much - dumped in shelters or found roaming the streets. They have been abandoned, neglected, starved and possibly physically abused. They need TIME, PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING and LOVE in order to succeed in their new homes. Sometimes it may take several months for a rescue dog to make the adjustment to your home and family. If you aren't 100% committed to making this work with your new dog, then please don't adopt. Any adopter of a rescue dog who has been through the adjustment period can tell you its worth it. No dog is perfect….just like no human is perfect. Please don't expect too much too soon from your new dog.

This is Babee - a big baby is what she is; loving , playful and loves to go for walks. She loves to be rubbed under her neck. When i took Babee to my home she was 8 weeks old. Mugs

Color: Black & Tan
Gender: Male
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Approximate Age: 5 years 8 months
Current Size: 70 lbs

Obedience Trained: Basic Commands
History: Mugs was found in northeastern Kabul, Afghanistan looking for food in a trash heap by American soldiers. The story told by locals was that he was brought to Afghanistan as a puppy to be a guard dog dog. When he was found on the roadside he only weighed 45 lbs. The soldier that brought Mugs back to the states does not have a home conducive to keeping Mugs. He loves toys, belly rubs, people, walks, adventures and would make a great companion.

Mugs
MugsMugsMugs
DESCRIPTION:

Mugs is currently in a short term foster so that he doesn’t have to sit in boarding waiting on another foster or forever home. His current foster is relocating to Korea on Friday. Mugs kept escaping his home's yard so he needs a home with a secure 6ft fence, lots of exercise and training. Mugs is 5-6 years old, good with people including children, but is picky about his pup friends. He does NOT like small dogs or cats as he has a very strong prey drive. He is crate trained. Mugs would flourish with an active family. He is 71 lbs, neutered, and even had a dental cleaning in February. Mugs is not crated during the work day when his foster is at work, he is not destructive but needs to be potty trained. He would likely benefit from a home where someone is home more often than not to help him with this.

DESCRIPTION:

I'm giving up Sasha due to marriage splitting and I have no idea what will be happening. It's so sad for everyone involved. My husband will not keep her and I won't know what will happen to Sasha.  She has some immediate dog aggression and with strangers, but honestly it goes away once she is with a dog or ignore cats.  She will try to eat food from other dogs only if it's laying out, never goes after if it's being eaten. She also stops immediately when commanded.
Again it will appear she is aggressive at first but pretty easily calms down and is friendly.
She had not been around many children often, but has watched them play then walks away
She gets 35 to 45 minutes daily.
No health issues, vaccines all up to date October 25th, also heart worm tested negative.

Siggy
Siggy
DESCRIPTION:

This handsome boy is Siggy, a 1 -2 year old neutered male German Shepherd mix. He was rescued from ACCT, a high kill animal shelter in Philadelphia.  Siggy is very food driven and is an attentive cooking partner while in the kitchen!  He knows basic commands like sit, stay, and give paw. Siggy loves to give hugs and to cuddle at night. He’s crate trained, housebroken and microchipped. He loves other dogs, but we’re not sure about cats.

The preferred environment for Siggy is a home with a fenced yard or someone willing to walk and exercise him often. He does well on a leash and loves to play fetch and run free. Siggy is energetic, agile and athletic. He’d make an excellent hiking or running partner and would be perfect if you have an “outdoorsy” lifestyle.

DESCRIPTION:

Taja is a very active pup. She does not get along with cats. She lives with two older dogs who do not have the same energy level as she does. She is NOT friendly with dogs she doesn't know. She does show aggression towards dogs she sees in her "turf". Food aggression is also an issue, even with the other dogs in a separate area from her, she still growls while eating. She is on the skinny side, she eats twice a day and her food was just changed to high protein to try to get her to gain some weight. She is three months past due on her shots. While we have been looking for a new home for Taja over the past few months, we were not letting her go to an environment that did not suit her. Due to the sudden death of my mother, who was the caretaker for my grandmother, Taja will need to be rehomed. My grandmother will be residing with us soon, and Taja has nearly knocked her down multiple times when she visits. Taja is good with my kids, however, does not like when my kid's friends come to visit. She would be best suited as the only dog in the house, without cats, and without young children. She needs a large yard to run in. We have about an acre, and she is trained on a wireless electric fence. We are not asking for a "rehoming fee", but that the next owner pay to get her caught up on shots before ownership is transferred. Multiple people have showed interest in her, but either didn't follow thru or didn't have an appropriate environment for her.

If you think you can provide a good home for our girl, please contact us. Thank you.

Zar

Color: Black and brown
Gender: Male
Breed: German Shepherd Dog
Age: 7 years 2 months
Current Size: Large
Housebroken: Yes
Obedience Trained: Yes
Altered: Yes

Good With Kids: Unknown
Good With Cats: No
Other Dogs OK: No
DESCRIPTION:

Zar's family is finding less time to dedicate to our dog and feel he would be better off in a home where someone can continue to give him the attention he deserves.

Zar was attacked at 9 months old by another dog, which has made him very dog aggressive and cannot live with other dogs or animals. He should also not be taken to dog parks or any place where he is unattended with other animals.

Zar has never been aggressive toward a human. He is very loving and wishes to constantly be by your side. Zar has not been allowed to be near his current owner's toddler unattended for safety's sake and they feel it would be best if his new owner did not have young children.

Zoe
Zoe
DESCRIPTION:

Zoe isn’t a bad girl, but she’s in a situation right now that is not bringing out the best in her.  She is a Shepherd mix, maybe Dutch Shepherd in the mix.

She needs to be in a home without other dogs and ONLY with adults who are very experienced working with dominant /anxiety defensive dogs, such as dog trainers or K9 officers.   NO FIRST TIME DOG OWNERS, please.

We adopted Zoe from our local shelter when she was about 6 months old, and she had been a stray.  She has lived with our other three older dogs but no cats. She loves teenaged kids, and also loves to chase squirrels and deer, but is trained to an electronic fence.

Because of her tough beginnings, she has always had fears/anxieties and defensive behavior related to food and attention.  One of our GSDs went blind this past year from SARD, and is also mostly deaf, and this has created a big issue for Zoe, who doesn’t understand that she’s not being ignored or challenged by this dog.   Zoe now feels she has to dominate the other dogs and even the humans in our house, and despite our best efforts with different dog trainers and a behavioral vet, the best solution is to rehome her where she will not feel this anxiety and fear.

Zoe is healthy, has had a recent exam with normal blood work, is up to date on all vaccinations, receives flea/tick/heartworm meds regularly, is housetrained, walks well on leash, and knows all her obedience commands.  She is very smart and learns quickly.  She is not high energy, and is happy to lie around the house, but loves to go for walks and car rides.  She’s a great girl, but needs a better situation to be happy and have a better life.

Thanks for considering Zoe!

Please contact Hal Horenberg, Home at Last Sanctuary, 301-983-0614, if you would like to start an adoption application.
