Adoption And Rescue Services For German Shepherd Dogs In Maryland
The following listings show LOCAL
available GSD or GSD mixes that are being surrendered by their owners
or placed by their fosters.
This page is NOT
for the 'selling' of dogs.
If you have
inquired about any dog listed on this page and been asked for an
"adoption fee" of any kind,
please contact us immediately at
updates_web@magsr.org and let us know. As a dog rescue
organization, we advocate rescue adoptions only. In Addition, and
for the same reasons, we require that all dogs listed on this page be
spayed/neutered as a condition of their adoption.
These dogs are not part of the MAGSR program;
we have not evaluated any of these dogs. We list
them here because they are special and deserve a second look - - and
a second chance. For more information on any of these dogs, please

Donations are appreciated!

TO DONATE TO MAGSR
If you are placing
your dog in a new home please make sure the home he/she may go to is
safe, loving, and dedicated. If contacted by anyone stating they
are with any type of K9 department please contact your local police
department K9 unit and inquire as to the reputation of that
person/group/organization. Not all people using rank titles are indeed with a legitimate K9 unit and you could be placing your dog at
risk.
I'm beautiful to
look at
And wonderful to hold,
But please don't adopt me
If you wont keep me 'til I'm old.
Good things come to those who wait.
The saying really is true.
Just give me a chance to be a good dog,
And I'll never stop loving you.
Adopting a dog is a
lifetime
commitment. If you aren't prepared to work with your dog through
the adjustment period and beyond, please look no further. If you
wont keep your dog if you move or as your family grows, please look
no further. If you aren't prepared to nurse your dog back to health
if he gets ill or if she needs surgery, please look no further.
Rescue dogs have been through so much - dumped in shelters or found
roaming the streets. They have been abandoned, neglected, starved
and possibly physically abused. They need TIME, PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING
and LOVE in order to succeed in their new homes. Sometimes it
may take several months for a rescue dog to make the adjustment to your
home and family. If you aren't 100% committed to making
this work with your new dog, then please don't adopt. Any adopter
of a rescue dog who has been through the adjustment period can tell you
its worth it. No dog is perfect….just like no human is perfect.
Please don't expect too much too soon from your new dog.

Description: Bandit was originally my parents puppy. I took him w/ me when I moved out in dec. He is great w/ the immediate family, myself, my 6yr brother and parents but no one else could come near house. He is very territorial and has fear aggression. He bit a ups delivery man once. He desperatley needs more training. He had obiedence school but was not worked enough at home and when my parents owned him was kept in a kennel. Hoping it was just the enviorment I took him w/ me but he is now getting that way at my house, however i live in a small town house and he cant be inside since my boyfriend and i are both allergic. He does have the abiltity to adapt to people, as he now loves my boyfriend. He just needs to be SLOWLY introduced to people. I take him to petsmart to be groomed, and he has no problems, its just that he is territorial of the house. He needs a good home where he has lots of room to run and LOTS and lots of attention. he has never been in an enviorment where he gets that. We can not handle him anymore. he loves us very much we really want him in a home but i can not deny he will be a handful

Description: Casper is a very loving, loyal and good natured family dog with lots of energy. He needs to be somewhere that he can run for at least an hour or two a day. He is extremely friendly towards people, a bit wary of strangers, but has never shown aggression towards a person. He is trained and fairly consistent in basic obedience commands, sit/stay/down/heel/come (in both English and German). He loves training and working outdoors and might be a good candidate for competitive obedience or agility with the right training. He is crate trained and house broken. We rescued Casper from a kill shelter when he was about 8 weeks old. He has been with us ever since. We live in a small townhouse with a tiny fenced in backyard. When we rescued him, we did not realize he would grow to the size he has. It has been a heartbreaking decision to give him up, but we do not have the space to give him what he needs and deserves. Casper needs both a larger house and yard due to his size and energy level. Casper is absolutely wonderful with our 18 month old son. He is up to date on all shots, vaccines and has already had his yearly check up for 2008. Casper will make a great family pet for someone who has the space for him to exercise/play and time to give him the attention he deserves.

Description: Hi, we are Georgia, Duncan and Kuma and we sure could use your help. You see our faithful guardian; Nancy rescued us from pretty desperate situations and provided us with the perfect forever home. In fact, Nancy promised us that she would be our forever home and she held true to her promise. Unfortunately, this disease called cancer made an unexpected visit and decided to stay with her. Just as she rescued us, we tried to return the favor by rescuing her from this unwanted visitor. It worked for awhile but we were unsuccessful and lost our faithful guardian.
So, as much as we loved our forever home and forever guardian, we find ourselves in the position of having to find another. I know it is difficult to get a feel for how wonderful we are. We sure would appreciate it if you would read the descriptions of us and look at our pictures. Perhaps they will peak your interest or you may know of someone who would be willing to make us a part of their family.
If you have any questions or would like to see us for real, our guardian’s friend Jane Mooney is working diligently to find us homes. You can reach Jane at jdmooney@bepawswecare.com or on her cell at 703-470-6130.
Hi, my name is Duncan. I am a Shepherd Mix but look very much like a purebred shepherd. I have black and tan coloring and think I am quite good looking. I am a six year old neutered male. My birthdate is 4/8/2002. I am great with children and get along well with other dogs. What you should really know about me is that I love to play with anyone; two legged or four, who will play with me. Don’t tell anyone but despite my 77 pound frame, I am scared of cats. I have quite a bit of energy and am very vocal about expressing my feelings. When Nancy adopted me in 2002, I had a bout with mange but that was treated and I have not had a recurrence since. I am house trained, crate trained and leash trained and used to a fenced in yard. I have become bosom buddies with my pal Georgia so I know my human friends are going to do everything possible to keep Georgia and me together.

Description: Ella is such a little sweetheart! She is not quite two years old and is the victim of a divorce. She's cute as a button with that one floppy ear. She has a soft and sweet personality and is a bit timid right now because her world has been turned upside down, poor thing. Her short life has been spent in a 10*10 kennel during the day and a crate during the night. Still, with minimal human intervention, Ella is very loving and trustful. She is underweight at less than 50 lbs. This little girl will blossom with some TLC and she will make some family very happy. Ella is spayed, current on all vaccinations, flea and HW preventative. Vet reference, personal references and a home visit are mandatory.

Description: Recently I had a 3yr German shepherd returned to me. This is a puppy from a litter we sold. The owner has had a stroke and is no longer able to take care of him. When I agreed to take the dog back I had a new owner lined up, but as things happened this fell through.
I would love to keep him, however, I already have three German shepherds and the youngest is not too fond of this one. Tensions are high; he has not been fixed which isn't helping things even though my dogs have been fixed. I can not afford to do this at this time.
He was raised as an outside dog & I am training him to be an inside dog. He has a great disposition, quiet, willing to learn, loves car rides, loves my boys, gets along with other dogs even when they don't like him. He will be 3 in May, has papers, and a dog house. I own his mother & father and there are no health issues that we have encountered. He is a smaller stature for this bred, long coat, & primarily black. I have attached two pictures.
If there is anyway you could help me place him with a home, I would be very grateful. If I do not place him soon I will need to take him to the local SPCA.
primarily black med build , long hair german shepherd. Born on mothers day 2005, returned to birth family after a stroke disabled owners. He wis an outside dog now being trained as inside dog. He has papers. Parents are on site - there is no history of hip or health problems for 3 generations. He has a quiet calm disposition & willingness to please.

Hello, this is Georgia. Actually, I respond much better to my nickname, “Pretty”. I am the matriarch of our pack at 9 years old. I was born on 12/8/98. I am spayed and I am a purebred German Shepherd. I think you will find my red and black coloring quite attractive. I am the smallest of the bunch but every part of my 62 pound body is full of love and affection. I am great with children. I too have a secret. Something happened in my past (before Nancy) and I get along fabulously with other male dogs but not with other female dogs. As sweet as I am, when I encounter another female dog, I don’t do well. The other thing you should know about me is that I love to chase things. I am not sure how I would do in a home with cats as I have never been exposed to them. I am in very good health and so much want to be housemates with my forever buddy, Duncan. I am house trained, crate trained, leash trained and used to a fenced in yard.

| DESCRIPTION:
My dog is named, Gilda. She is a 12-year-old
female pure-bred AKC-certified German Shepard. She is up
to date on her shots, crate-trained, healthy, active and friendly.
She has no hip problems, as I know is a problem for many other
adult German Shepherds. If you didn't know how old she was,
you would guess that she was much younger. If she had any
serious health problems or other physical disabilities, I might
consider putting her to sleep, but because she is doing so well,
and do not think that this is a good idea for her. She is
great with children and adults, but since she grew up without
any other pets around, she does tend to be territorial or jealous
with other cats or dogs, so she would be much better off in a
home that does not already have another pet around.
We have had Gilda since she
was a puppy, but unfortunately, she lives with my father now who
lives alone and is unable to take care of her. I want to
find a new home for her because I believe that she can be a valuable
companion for someone and because she is in serious need of a
new loving home. She enjoys being outdoors, but she can
stay inside a house and just be let out sometimes, or be taken
on walks. She adapts well to new lifestyles and environments,
as she has had to do this during several transitions in my family's
life. At this time, she is not being taken care of well, however,
and things are not going to get better any time soon, so I would
really appreciate it if someone could give Gilda a new home. Thank
you for your attention and I hope to hear back from you as soon
as possible.

Description: Grigg
(a.k.a. Griggly Bear) was adopted from an animal control shelter
in Central Florida in October 2007 briefly before I relocated
to Western Maryland for a year of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA.
Grigg is a wonderful dog and I am regretfully looking for a new
family for her due to her medical issues. Our vet in Florida diagnosed
Grigg with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) within a week
of her adoption. The condition requires long-term management and
the cost unfortunately exceeds the means allowed by my modest
stipend. I had hoped that I would be able to swing it for the
year but am reconciling myself to the idea that that may not be
possible. I am trying to do what is in Grigg's best interest and
want her to continue to enjoy the best possible care. Currently,
her maintance requires prescription dog food and medication for
the EPI. She was recently treated for a tick disease which she
likely contracted while a stray back in Florida and is currently
being tapered off steroids.
Grigg has an excellent temperment and is an absolute pleasure
to be around. She is house-trained, knows a few basic commands,
and LOVES to go along on car rides. Grigg carries a squeeky toy
with her wherever she goes and uses it to let you know when she
needs something. Requests for trips outside, breakfast, and general
attention are usually made with a few polite squeeks. She is very
respectful and I have never come home to find anything chewed…
though she will help herself to snacks if you leave them on the
counter:-) Due to her disorder, she doesn't require a lot of exercise
and will do best living indoors and around her people. Grigg is
up to date on all vaccinations and maintains a happy--even excited--attitude
about visits to our veterinarian. Please contact me if you think
you might be able to give this amazing dog the comfort, love,
and support she deserves.

Nihongo. This means hello in Japanese. Actually the name Kuma is a boy name in Japanese which means “bear”. I am the youngest but biggest (91 pounds) and strongest of the pack. Since Nancy adopted me when I was 6 months old, I have been raised with German Shepherds and as a result really don’t know that I am an Akita. I just think I am a different looking Shepherd. On March 15, 2008 I celebrated my fifth birthday. My black and silver markings are quite exquisite if I do say so myself. I guess I need to reveal my secret too. I love to sneak up on people from behind and nip them (ever so slightly). I am not sure why I do it, but I sure do get a lot of attention from doing it!!! I am in great condition and enjoy being around other dogs and children. I have a soft spot for female dogs and will let them do anything to me but I guard my resources with other male dogs, even though I am neutered. I too am house trained, leash trained and crate trained and used to a fenced in yard.

| Description: Lily and Stanley
are in need of a new home or we will be forced to return them to
Animal Rescue. They are both great, loving dogs. We adopted them
in 2001, when they were just puppies. They are brother and sister
and they have never been apart. They are great to have around as
they loved to play together and even lay around the house together.
They like to play outside and a favorite game is when Lily chases
Stanley around the yard. You just have to say, "Lily--get Stanley!"
They are used to being the babies of the family and when we had
children, they were a bit upset. They have never shown any aggression
towards our children, who are 1 1/2 and 3, but they would probably
be best around slightly older children (5+). With working full-time,
and having two children, we just cannot give them the attention
that they need and deserve. Please help us keep them together. If
we have to send them back to Animal Rescue, they could be separated.
We have been looking for a home through word of mouth for over a
year. This is our last chance. If you are willing, we would like
you to formally adopt them through Maryland Line Animal Rescue and
would need to fill out some paperwork. Any fees will be paid by
us and we will be glad to send all of their things with them--two
crates, water dish, food dish, toys, leashes, etc.

Description: They are in desperate need of a home. They have all had their parvo shots and been wormed twice. I have had maggie (momma) for 3yrs, she has had 2 litter of pups and is very healthy. She needs a home where she can run, she is very energetic and extremly good natured. There are 2 girls and 1 boy. Jake is the boy, hes the leader of the pack. He's black with a little white on his chest. Foxy is my pick of the three she is very timid, loveable, and has one bright blue eye and one brown eye. The vet said shes not blind that it was caused from having husky or blue heeler in her breed. She was the runt out of 9 pups, and Ive had to seperate her from the others cause they pick at her. Then theres Karma, shes the attention getter. She looks more like a german shepard then the rest of them. Her markings are beautiful, her coat looks like a chocolate and caramel mix. she has a black snout and a brown face. These pups were born August 27, 2007. I have no means of keeping them much longer. I ran into finanicial problems and my son and I had to move in with family for awhile and they are currently being kept pinned up together except for Foxy and she has been put with another dog in the family. They are to wonderful to be put to sleep and if I cant get rid of them soon I have no choice but to do that.PLEASE HELP!!!!
The contact person is not the owner but volunteer with another rescue that is helping place the mom and puppies.

Description: Rousseau
exhibits some fear aggression when meeting new people. He has never
bitten anyone and will be loving and affectionate when he knows
you. He needs an experienced dog person with the time and commitment
to help him learn that meeting new people is fun! His prospective
home should be calm and relatively quiet, no kids. Since he enjoys
other dogs, a home with canine companions from whom he can learn
would be very helpful. He is not a high energy dog.

Description: Schotzie is a sweet lovable dog. She loves kids
and is very tolerant of young children. She loves roughhousing with
my labs. She loves to be walked but would be just as happy to be
the resident couch potato. She is spayed, up to date on all of her
shots, is microchipped and is on heartworm preventative. She needs
a new home because her owner is taking a job as a firefighter, which
means he will be out of the house for longer than 8 or 9 hours.
She has some separation anxiety and she is fearful of some men,
but has never been aggressive toward anyone. I know that with love
and patience she will make a wonderful loyal companion for a family
that is willing give her the time she needs.

Description: Vega was born in Sept. 2003. A large breed
Shiloh Shepard, like a German Sheppard with long Beautiful Hair.
Vega is an awesome dog and we would love to keep him, if we had
the space. We are young New Parents of a 10 month old child, We
live in a small 50's style house with a fenced in backyard, The
simply is not enough space and time to handle him along with our
two other midsize dogs. He is extremly loved and is not coming from
a broken home AT ALL!!! We have tried to make it work for a long
time now but it wearing on us little by little. If there was any
other option.... Anyway Vega is awesome. 4-5 yrs old Big Smile,
Full of Life, The Protector, Big Huggie Bear, Super Smart, Willing
to Learn New Trick, Will do Anything for a Scooby Snack. He has
a Quirk or two, but then don't we all?

Description:Family dog that loves to play. Has a lot of energy.
Leash trained and house broken. Knows the normal commands (sit,
stay, lay). But with no running room he has extra energy. Have shown
him to several people. 2 had no experience and scared him. The third,
Wolfgang was great with the 13 and 17 year old children, went right
to them and let them pet and hug on him. The adult male, he barked
at and I was afraid and pulled him away. |

Description: I have been working with Woody over the past
few months and he is really improving. He walks much better on a
leash and gets along with other dogs. He is very inquisitive and
loves attention. His lineage Lab/ Retriever make him very aware
of his surroundings so he is constantly looking checking things
out. This guy is no problem and we continue to work on proper leash
etiquette. He was great in the park with loads of children and other
dogs. House broken yes and can remain home for extended periods
of time without incident. He loves playing with his stuffed animal.
giving kisses, and being cuddled. He would love to be in a home
that has a fenced in area and plenty of room to run. |
