Our Commitments

I'm beautiful to look at
And wonderful to hold,
But please don't adopt me
If you wont keep me 'til I'm old.

Good things come to those who wait.
The saying really is true.
Just give me a chance to be a good dog,
And I'll never stop loving you.

THESE BEAUTIFUL DOGS ARE NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION...BUT, WE HOPE, SOME OF THEM MAY BE SOON!

These dogs' stories are examples of our commitment to rescue.  It illustrates how we fight for each and every dog we get in, and how it is often a road filled with obstacles, both emotional and monetary.  Some of these beautiful dogs will be available for adoption after some love and rehabilitation.  We've taken in dogs and given over two years of care in some cases before allowing them to be adopted...click here for shining examples of why we "bother" to help the helpless dogs.Despite not being available for adoption, these loving dogs still deserve a good life and MAGSR is committed to giving it to them.  In all cases, they were either neglected and abandoned and often times seriously abused, or just given up on, all of which has caused considerable emotional and sometimes physical trauma.  With the help of caring trainers, and probably more importantly loving and patient fosters, we have been able to rehabilitate many dogs in similar conditions.  With the help of generous sponsors, dedicated fosters, and lifesaving financial grants, MAGSR has been fortunate enough to care for even the most desperate of dogs.

DESCRIPTION: Gunther and Alexa have spent the last four years much loved and pampered by a very wonderful man who very suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. They were his babies, and this man's parents wanted to make sure that they would be safe and cared for.

Update: Alexa took a long walk up heart attack hill" today at the kennel. She walks great on the leash and though she occasionally gave our volunteer the "Are you crazy?" look, she made it all the way up the hill without trouble. She is smart enough to know when she needs a breather! Alexa walks like an angel on the leash and completly enjoyed her long outing. She is a gorgeous dog who does not look her age! OK, who gave Alexa botox!?! There are no wrinkle lines on her!

Update: Alexa went to her retirement home last week! She is in a place where she will live out her years surrounded by people who love her and will see to her every need. She has a nice home with a wonderful back yard to explore -- lots of flowers and an occasional squirrel to watch -- she may just chase one or two now and then, you can never tell -- she still is a pretty spry ole gal! :) She is happy; she is loved, and is bringing joy to those who are caring for her. We cannot ask for anything more.

Update: 12/20/07 Alexa has trained the staff here at her foster home very well, she has had us wrapped around her little paw from day 1. What a smart girl she is, she knows that we keep her lead in the closet so when we open the closet door she is right there letting us know that she wants to go for a walk, or better yet a CAR RIDE..Alexa helps with the housework too, by putting her toys away when she is done playing with them. She will put them in her crate and cover them up with her blanket, until she wants them again... Well that's all for now, Alexa and everybody here wishes you all a very MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A GREAT NEW YEAR.

DESCRIPTION:  China lived with another dog and several kids ages 2-16 but it says she enjoys the older kids.  Her shelter paperwork says that she is afraid of fireworks, thunderstorms, vacuum cleaners, mops, and brooms.  She is said to like to play with stuffed animals and that she can be left alone without issue and no accidents in the house.  She's a slightly older girl but one with lots of love and life to share with the less active family.

Update: China has recently gone to see an eye specialist due to obvious problems seeing. We are sorry to report that China is currently 80% blind and within 7 months she will be completely blind. She has a genetic blindness that is akin to retinitis pigmentosis in humans. While this is not the news we wanted for China we do want to point out that she is still loving life and fully functional around the home and yard. She has foster dogs to keep her company, and help her out and loves getting attention. She will enjoy the less active home that can take her for safe walks and keep her safe from the unknown. Aside from not moving your furniture around too often, China will learn to adapt to her new home quickly.

Update: China is a wonderful girl to people, all people, but is a very dominant female and as such bullies the other dogs in the house much of the time.  She does however play with them outside.  We are working on modifying this behavior. Despite China's many great qualities, she does require special attention.  China has an issue with incontinence, which can be controlled by medication and water intake control however.  China has a weight issue too as you might notice.  Because of her blindness now however, she gets very upset when forced to go for a walk outside of her comfort zone (which is about a block in any direction from the house).  We have her on weight control food and are trying to exercise her more in smaller stints. We are working with a vet to help control China's medical issues but in general China is a  happy girl who enjoys being with people.  She is very loving and content, and as you can see in the pictures is quite a princess!

DESCRIPTION: Jerome is lucky to be alive and even luckier to have been found by a MAGSR volunteer.  She was on her way to her country home when she saw him on the side of the road having obviously been hit by a car.  He was not able to walk well but otherwise was alert and was always very sweet.  With the help of another passerby, our volunteer got him into her car and drove him the 3 hours back to the emergency vet office.  He is being treated now and we will update you soon on his prognosis.  Wish him well please!

Update: Since I picked up Jerome in the middle of the street 3 months ago, he has made incredible strides. He was infested with fleas to the point of missing much of his fur, his ear was severely infected, he could not walk or stand up, and he was anemic and terribly underweight. Such a sad sight, yet when a man passing by helped me lift Jerome into the car, he was so sweet and gentle, in spite of his pain and suffering. After a full examination by an orthopedic surgeon, it was determined that Jerome has severe arthritis all over his body, including his elbows, hips, back and neck. This may be hereditary, but more likely was a result of living his life in a pen with concrete floors and no cushioning. This can cause severe arthritis from laying on cold, hard concrete and no activity. Poor boy, on top of that, he does have some neurological problem, but surgery is not an option due to the arthritis. However, with the miracle drug of Derramaxx, a pain killer/anti-inflammatory, he can now walk and share fun times outside with his dog friends! He looks wobbly when he walks, and sometimes his feet get a little twisted up. But all in all, he can get around and play and act just like all the other dogs. We couldn't be happier, as we thought he would never walk again, and now he is free to wander and play and sniff and do all the fun things dogs do. He also takes time every day to come up to us and show us his appreciation. He will snuggle his head into our laps and just look at us with those eyes that are saying "thank you". He quite often tells us that also, as he is quite a "talker".  I think that is the hound dog in him. He definitely is a country boy, who had a really hard beginning of his life, and is living the luxury life with warm, comfy beds, ample water and food, lots of dog and cat friends, a real roof over his head, and lots of love. Jerome is lucky to have MAGSR helping him live a good life. They have supported all of his medical bills and have supplied everything he needs to allow him to walk again and regain his health.  Any support you can give to MAGSR helps dogs like Jerome live a life of love and peace!

Heart dog: Melba has special needs.  For details please email us here.  We have created a "Training Fund" in an effort to help some of our dogs who are in particular need.
M
elba is one such dog.  Click here to learn more.

DESCRIPTION: Melba is smaller than she appears in her pictures.  She's a VERY affectionate girl who loves attention and likes cuddling up in your lap if you let her.  She was scared to get in and out of the car by herself today but once in she just lay down next to the person sitting by her and went to sleep.  She has a great time playing with Frodo once we got to the kennel finally too so would do well with another playful, but fairly gentle dog to play with.  She should not live in a house with cats or other small furry creatures however.  She can get pretty focused on other dogs playing and will start barking at them to get their attention so that they will invite her to play too but is otherwise quiet and friendly with anyone who wants to meet her.  She's a sweetheart who will fit in just about any new home!

Update: Melba was adopted and went to some training sessions with her new owners.  They did their best but found that Melba really just needs to be in a home with a family that will be sure to take the alpha positive with her. She needs obedience to learn the rules and a strong leader to keep her in line.  Melba is a sweet girl but she still needs rules and boundaries.  She is now attending obedience classes with a volunteer to try and rehabilitate her.

Update: Melba is one of our most "special dogs". She is very special to a lot of us! In fact, it is pretty common knowledge that she has more fans in the rescue than the average movie star! She has a very distinctive personality to say the least! Melba is the rescues resident Diva and she knows it and she plays it to the hilt. She is a dynamo in a fur coat -- a playful puffball with an attitude. Melba requires strong handling and she is presently undergoing a training program with some of our very dedicated volunteers to help her adjust to the real world! She came back to us with a few more quirks and fears then she had when she left us and we are now working hard to help her overcome all the things that make her less than the perfect little pet she should be. Melba is smart, cute as a button and will steal your heart in an instant. She is not quite ready yet, but hopefully we will have her ready for her forever home soon.

DESCRIPTION: Nakota is a handsome, tail-wagging, friendly young man who has not let his recent pain and suffering hamper his personality. Nakota belonged to a family with children and was once an "inside" dog, but as happens so frequently, he eventually became an "outside" dog.
Poor Nakota suffered a broken toe after having his foot run over by a ATV. His family took him to the vets, where a cast was put on his foot. As with any dog, Nakota began chewing at his cast (they did not put an e-collar on him or go back for ANY follow up visits to have the cast and wound checked over). Several days later, a family member removed his cast and put duct tape on his leg instead....and left him. Over a period of 4 weeks, Nakota lost circulation to his hock and foot. Can you even imagine the pain and discomfort this poor boy must've experienced? FINALLY, someone noticed raw flesh creeping out from under the tape, so they took him back to the vets....about 3 1/2 weeks too late!!! The ER vet said Nakota's injuries were some of the worst she has seen in her 20+ years of trauma practice. Two of Nakota's toes were dead, he had no skin at all from his hock to his toes, all of his flesh had rotted off and severe infection had set in. I saw Nakota's foot, and saw a horrific site of exposed bone, tendon and cartilage. His center foot pad had completely rotted off. Upon removing the tape and trying to clean the wound (and bring down his fever), the vet suggested that Nakota be surrendered to their office, so they could find him a home that would cover the expenses his medical needs would incur. The lady signed Nakota over...and the doctor called MAGSR.
Nakota was taken to a specialist, where the surgeon is doing everything he possibly can to save Nakota from losing his left rear leg. On 6/22, Nakota had his first surgery...and his 2 remaining healthy toes were amputated, so those toes pads that still had blood flow, could be moved, in hopes of giving Nakota that big foot pad that he must have to support his weight. He went back for a check-up and bandage change yesterday. New tissue is starting to grow and one of the wound is trying to heal. The relocated toe pads appear to be receiving blood flow. Nakota will need to go back to the surgeon every 3 days to have his wounds checked and his dressing changed. Right now, Nakota is on crate restriction and needs to be kept quiet for 8 weeks. He is at my home recovering and his spirits are good. He is an active young dog, who is confused about all he's had to face in the past few weeks. In spite of his pain and confusion, Nakota still wags his tail as people come and go, and give kisses by the dozen.
MAGSR has once again, taken in a dog with medical needs....and Nakota's vet bills are not cheap. However, Nakota has suffered enough, and we at MAGSR felt he deserved a second chance. We WERE his only chance. If possible, please consider making a donation in Nakota's name...or even becoming his sponsor. You generosity will allow us to help even more dogs, even though some of our current dogs, like Nakota, are expensive!
Please help us, help those who are so desperate for love, kindness and another chance, after they were so mistreated by the hands of another human being.
Check back soon for more updates...

Update: Nakota was seen by Dr. Keats today, and finally had his sutures removed. His relocated toe pads, appear to be receiving blood flow and healthy at this time. His mutliple wounds continue to close and shrink in size--it is not known if skin grafting will be necessary. Nakota moves about like nothing is wrong. He loves to chase his tennis balls and carry his *pink* piggy around with him, showing off! He is in good spirits, considering what he's been through!! Nakota has settled in nicely in my home, with quite a few other fur sisters and brother with whom to share his space. He loves his alone time with me, laying on my bed for tummy rubs and spoiling. Hopefully, next week, Nakota will have his hard cast removed, and transition to just wearing a soft bandage. Time will tell if his "new" foot will be functional. Nakota isn't out of the woods yet--if the remaining foot is not functional, then he could still lose his leg. Nakota is quite a character and has an amazing personality and gentle way about him. He loves riding in the car, meeting new people and playing ball. He loves his crate and spends the night in it, without ever complaining. Nakota is going to make someone a wonderful companion!

Update: Nakota has made it through 3 surgeries on his foot, to save his leg! A tough patient, indeed...but a sweet, loving boy without question! Nakota continues to require weekly check-ups with his very favorite Dr. Keats, to monitor his progress. At this time, all casts and bandages are OFF! Nakota is still very "interested" in his foot and likes to lick, lick, lick! He can not yet be trusted alone without a cervical collar AND a muzzle, when crated during the work day. Throughout this entire ordeal, Nakota has been the best boy in the whole world. He accepts his fate everyday, when he is fitted with his collar and muzzle. All of Nakota's toes have been amputated and his only 2 healthy pads have been relocated to the end of his "stump" in an attempt to give him something to stand/bear weight on. These pads are still very tender and bleed frequently if he walks on hard or rough surfaces. He has managed to wear a blister on the end of one of his pads, so now he spends most of his uncrated time, wearing a soft fleece sock. This poor fella has quite a collection of socks! If left unsupervised, he wastes no time taking the sock OFF! :) Nakota is very tolerant of me handling his foot, (applying medication, looking at it, and putting in a sock). Despite his multiple surgeries, discomfort and frustration, he has never been less than an angel (except the several times he wiggled out of his collar and chewed on his foot-ugh)!! Nakota loves his siblings (2 other GSD's, a blind hound and a spry old basset hound) and never has any issues with other dogs. He's not a huge fan of squirrels, though! Those pesky critters entertain him (and his siblings) for hours! This boy loves nothing more than to be near his person, in the company of his housemates, laying in bed for a good night scratch, watching and listening to Animal Planet, chasing and parading around with a variety of toys (especially his pink alligator) and settling in for the night-happy to be OUT of his crate and his "uniform". He loves to go for rides, and clearly recognizes the beltway exit, that leads to the vets office! This jovial, fun-loving boy still needs some more time to heal before he'll be ready for adoption. When the ordeal of mulitple foot surgeries and healing are a memory, he'll be facing a slightly difficult neuter (one testicle is internal). I haven't told him about that yet! I have fostered many, many dogs over the years, and I'd have a tough time thinking of a dog with a sweeter disposition than Nakota! He is a favorite everywhere he goes! He loves when people stop by to visit, loves kids and enjoyed a recent trip to the pumpkin patch on our farm. I can't recall a single person he's met, that he hasn't liked. He sounds-off with the rest of my 'pack' when someone knocks, but quickly greets with a wagging tail. Nakota is a perfect example of how resilient dogs can be. He did not deserve the neglect he has suffered, or the long, trying road to recovery...which we are still traveling. I am proud of how he still continues to shine!

Update:  Nakota has healed nicely from his foot surgeries! This sweet boy has put his foot traumas behind him! Even though his foot has healed nicely, it is still tender and needs to be covered by a sock in the house, and a boot when he's outside. He loves to chase his tennis balls and play with his doggie siblings. His 'running around' time has to be limited so he doesn't 'rough-up' his foot. He has the best personality ever! He loves everybody and everything-except small, furry, fast-moving critters. Probably not the dog for a home with cats! Nakota is now fighting allergies and has been seeing a dermatologist. He is undergoing food trials to narrow down the cause of his allergies. Once again, he is taking this newest problem in stride and is still a happy, goofy boy! He loves to go for walks, loves to go for car rides and has now taken to sleeping in bed with his foster mommy. Nakota will send in another update once we have a handle on his allergy situation.
