DESCRIPTION: Destiny hitched a ride to MAGSR with her new doggy friend, Portia.  They had a nice girly, doggy type of chat on the ride here.  Destiny found herself in the same boat as her friend.  Not lookin' good.  Then some nice people took pity; she found herself at the shelter and then in a car with Portia -- on her way to MAGSR.  Great!  She is now on her way to finding that home she has always wanted; a nice person or people to love, walks, food, water, a bed.  Wow!  Perfect!  Destiny is young, needs to learn a few lessons in doggy ettiquette and such, needs to go to training with her people so they can all be happy with one another, and most of all needs to feel love and have a real home.  She is a very sweet and pretty girl waiting for her second chance.  Ask to meet Destiny.

Update: Destiny joined her new foster home this past weekend and is already out of her shell! This girl is on fire and wants to play, play, play! She definitely needs an active home that will be able to help her burn some of this energy and she would just love a canine playmate. It turns out that Ms. Destiny is actually an owner surrender after her human counterparts decided to move and not take her along. However, you would never think that she misses them at all because she is having a blast here with her foster siblings! Destiny loves to be chased and to engage in play, even with the dominant female GSD of the household. She is supposedly good with cats as well, per her shelter paperwork. Destiny is crate trained, housebroken and knows her basic obedience. She also appears to have basic house manners. For those of you familiar with the Belgian Malinois breed, Ms. Destiny definitely has some Mal in her. She is sensitive, sweet, energetic, and agile, however I have yet to see her play with a toy or a ball, maybe in time. She does seem to have a little hesitation in meeting strangers and being approached in her crate by strangers, however once you're in, you're in and she's all nuzzles and love! Destiny is ready to find her forever home and a backyard to make her playground...could that be yours???

DESCRIPTION: Murphy is a long, loooong legged boy! :)  He is a friendly chap; looking for a home.  Murphy is very comfortable with people - he has clearly at some point been a family dog.  He hops right in a car and sits very politely and waits to be driven to his destination -- just like it was something he clearly had done before many times.  He walks very nicely on a leash, and is friendly to other dogs -- he seems to have very nice manners! :)  Murphy will need some training and some polishing - just a little tweaking to make sure that he becomes the wonderful dog that we are sure he will be.  He is waiting to meet you and share some stories - maybe a treat or two. :)  Ask to meet Murphy - a fine looking boy!

Update: I spent some time with Murphy this weekend. He is an incredibly friendly dog who all ready knows some basic obedience. He walks nicely on a leash and took treats gently. He clearly was someone's pet at some point and really misses a family. He played quite happily with the ball and pretty much ignored the cat. He was much more interested in treats! Murphy is in great shape, with a nice shiny coat and long legs. He'd be great as a jogging partner or just as a snuggle buddy!

HILDI

sdClick here for more pictures

DESCRIPTION: Hildi was brought into the shelter after she had been hit by a car.  No one came forward to claim her.  She was treated for injuries to one leg and foot.  While not exceptionally bad, her injuries were nonetheless severe enough to require the amputation of two toes on her injured foot and a few days rest at the animal hospital.   Hildi is ok now-- she just looks like she had a bad manicure, that's all! :)  She can walk just fine and that foot is healing very nicely, thank you.  Hildi is sweet and a little shy, but is a very friendly girl who apparently was on her own and wandering, got lost and was hit by a car on a busy street.  She would like to thank all of the kind people who treated her with such gentle hands and made her feel better.  Hildi would love a home now - one with a nice safe yard would be good, and she is actively seeking some nice friendly people who need a pal for life.

Update: Hildi has been in her foster home for a couple weeks now, and we’ve gotten to know a little more about her. She is our sweet, sweet girl, who just seems to love everybody and is always ready to cuddle! We’re happy to report that Hildi is crate-trained, house-broken and quiet in the house. No chewing, excessive barking, etc. with this dog, no sir! She is a quiet-natured, easy-going girl, who has happily embraced everything presented to her in her foster home. Hildi met my two boy GSDs and easily became a member of the pack. She is not dominant, but no push-over either… to me, “respectful” is a word that characterizes her place in our household. Hildi has, so far, ignored the antics of my younger dog, and enjoyed the company of my older dog, and seems fine with them both in and out of the house. Because she has not been here long, I supervise them when together, but I’ve not observed any behavior that would indicate she could not cohabitate with other dogs in the household. She seems happy to be reunited with them when they have been separated, too. All the dogs are fed at the same time; Hildi is fed in her crate, and receives her food last. She is fine with this arrangement. She is not a picky eater, but doesn’t “scarf” down her food either, and usually leaves an empty or near empty bowl. Hildi walks well on a leash, never pulls, and enjoys being outside with you, doing the gardening, or just hangin’ out in the yard. She is not a high-energy dog, and doesn’t need lots of exercise to keep her balanced. Hildi also enjoys car-rides and rides quietly in my crate. Although not officially obedience-trained, it’s obvious she knows some commands: “sit” seems to come naturally to her. Being on the smaller side, she can also balance on her seat, “begging” for treats (we haven’t encouraged this, however!) and it’s hard to ignore how cute she is when she does this… She likes treats, any kind, and is kind and gentle when hand-fed. Again, we’ve noticed nothing to suggest any food-aggression in Hildi when fed on schedule, and with the proper “house-rules” in place. Hildi would fit well into just about any household or family. Although she’s not a active, athletic dog, she is not a couch-potato either, and would rise to the challenge of a young family, I feel. She also would fit easily into an older single or couple household, with a quiet atmosphere. Hildi is sweet to the max, loving and kind, and eager to be with her people. She’s so ready for a forever family – could it be yours? Come meet her and fall in love!

DESCRIPTION: Krieger is a very sweet and beautiful German Shepherd whose owners did not bother to claim him at the shelter. He is very well mannered and walks well on a leash and seems to know a few commands - sit, lie down, etc. Krieger is very friendly and was a gentleman to the other dog on his very long, long transport to rescue. He will need some understanding, he is a bit overwhelmed at his circumstances right now. He is actively seeking a new, responsible family to call his own. A family that will love him, feed him, take him to some training so he can show them the ropes, and will absolutely never abandon him - ever again! Krieger will make a wonderful addition to almost any family. He is smart, willing to learn anything that you may ask him to, and very eager to please. Tuesday

3 Click here for more pictures

DESCRIPTION:   Tuesday is a lovely girl whose owner could not devote enough time to her any longer and decided to give her up.  She was being left alone much too long because of his job and he felt that she deserved a better life.  She has lived in a home with children (now teens) since she was a puppy and does not understand what has happened.  Tuesday is crate trained and housebroken.  She is a perfect family dog......not high maintenance, not showy or rowdy....just a nice girl! :)  She is at the vet's office right now, for just a short time -- had a small cyst removed and was spayed...she should be ready to meet her public very soon.  Ask for an introduction to Tuesday -- and day you meet her will be a great day! :)

Update:  Tuesday's minor surgery for a cyst removal turned into a little bit of a  dramatic incident that required that she stay a little longer with the veterinary hospital. She somehow burst some of the stitches in her chest and is now recuperating from that!  Everything has been "fixed" :), and she is healing very nicely and she is on the road to complete recovery!.   It will not be too much longer before she will be able to run and romp outdoors and get that silly get up off her neck. :)  Tuesday would like everyone to know that she has been very ladylike in her endurance of this latest indignity -- and that she would just love to meet you all very soon! :).

Update: Tuesday has completely recovered from her little bump in the road as far as her surgery episode is concerned. She wishes to thank all those caring hands that were instrumental in her recovery. She has lost the ugly collar and is ready to take the next step towards finding a permanent place to rest her paws. Tuesday is a lovely lady of middle years. She is no spring chicken, but she ain't quite over the hill yet, either. :) Tuesday needs a special home. Somewhere along the way -- sometime in her past -- something or things happened that made Tuesday very mistrustful of some people. She is a bit of a "nervous nellie" and a fearful worry wart. Once she realizes that you are her friend, she relaxes and she is a very wonderful dog -- but she does need a special home - people who will understand the demons she seems to be battling and help her to work out some of her fears and quirks. Tuesday is sweet and loving once you gain her trust, she is housebroken and is very comfortable in a home. She loves her toys, loves to play "find it" and is basic obedience trained. Please ask us about this special lady. We will be happy to tell you all about her; and if you can provide her with the training and structure and gentle discipline that she will need to become a seamless fit into your household, we can arrange for a meeting with this lovely girl.

Update:   From Tuesday's very special friend:)  "I have met a lot of dogs in my life, but Tuesday is one that will forever standout. She is a ‘dog persons’ dog, if that makes any sense. She wants to be in pack with a confident leader. Not only does she demand this leadership but she respects it, bonds to it, and trusts it with her entire being. In fact, if she ever thinks of doing something naughty, like barking at a stranger, she will look over at me as to say, “I know I can’t but please just this once?” Tuesday is an extremely emotional dog. She is nervous around new people and often barks at them, but if corrected she will put herself at ease rather quickly. She wears her heart on her sleeve and develops strong bonds. When I say strong I mean, always by your side, will listen to any and every command that is given.  She is a protector, a child’s best friend, and a dog that went through extreme depression when her family left her after seven years.  Tuesday is not a dog to be overlooked, she deserves a forever home and wherever that home may be, they will be lucky to have her".

DESCRIPTION: Little Spirit was literally scooped up from the pound and on her way to rescue all in the matter of about 48 hours. She is very happy about this! :) She is such a sweet and loving girl and right now is enjoying life in her foster home with foster sibs and some very kind humans. Spirit is pretty and adorable. All puppies are adorable. and again, everyone wants a puppy. A puppy is a blank slate - what you put into this wiggly wonderful creature is what you will get. They need commitment and training, patience and love....and lots of it and for a time span of approximately 12 - 15 years.. If you are not willing to go all the way for this precious little girl, - make that commitment of that many years, no matter what life throws your way - and what life changes you may encounter, please do not apply.. Please do think this adoption process through very, very thoroughly. We take each and every adoption very seriously - and puppies particularly because we know that there will be changes in the future. Changes physically as they grow, and changes in their personalities as they become adults. Puppies are a lot of work -- ask any foster parent! But they are so well worth it! Puppy kisses and snuggles are priceless - and an adult dog's companionship, loyalty and love are also priceless! :) If you think that you will be able to give pretty little Spirit a wonderful home, please ask to meet her.

DESCRIPTION: Molly is a very sweet and gentle lady that seems to have come upon bad times. She has lost her home and she is very, very thin and neglected looking. Her hip bones and ribs stick out and you can see all the bumps on her spine. Not good! :( She is one of the nicest and friendliest dogs I have met in quite a while. She rode well on her way from the vets and we had a nice chat! :) She is very anxious to put her not so glorious past behind her and move forward now. We are not sure if she may have lived inside a home and has house manners or was strictly an outside dog. As with most dogs that are in the process of "between homes" she might need a few reminders as to her "new house protocol". Aside from more than a few good meals and maybe a bath somewhere along the way, Molly is going to need some reminders in the training department and just the reassurance that her life is now on the right path....that everything is going to be fine and she will find that wonderful family she so deserves very soon. Molly is anxious to meet you. Please stop by and say hello

DESCRIPTION:  Wow! We picked up a magic lamp -- and guess what we found? :) A very adorable puppy girl! Genie is a cute, friendly and silly little girl that was saved from the pound in the nick of time. -- Maybe it was magic......:) She is settling her paws right now in her new foster home....getting the lay of the land, so to speak, and sniffing new sniffs and meeting new friends. Her foster mom will update soon with new pictures and more information about this pretty girl.

Update: Genie is a bundle of running, jumping, playing, chewing (and goofiness) wrapped up in fur! She loves her 4 legged siblings, not too sure what the cats are (or their purpose) and thinks humans are the best, especially the shorter ones!  Genie will need lots of training, she is only a baby, as well as 12-14 years of commitment from her new family.  She promises to be the best ever!

Update:Genie is proving herself to be a smart little girl. She has learned "sit" and "heel". She walks very well on leash and is starting to learn "stay". Genie sleeps all night in her crate, keeping it clean and dry. Genie loves to
play fetch with her tennis ball, or anything else that is thrown for her. The puppy mouthing is lessening as she
realizes her toys are so much more fun, and don't get her into trouble! We are still working on "come" with a fairly
good success rate but Genie is a puppy after all that can be easily distracted by anything floating in the air, making a sound, or just the wind in her face. Genie is a good little girl waiting for her very own family to grow up with!

DESCRIPTION: Gunther and Alexa have spent the last four years much loved and pampered by a very wonderful man who very suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. They were his babies, and this man's parents wanted to make sure that they would be safe and cared for.

Update: Alexa went to her retirement home last week! She is in a place where she will live out her years surrounded by people who love her and will see to her every need. She has a nice home with a wonderful back yard to explore -- lots of flowers and an occasional squirrel to watch -- she may just chase one or two now and then, you can never tell -- she still is a pretty spry ole gal! :) She is happy; she is loved, and is bringing joy to those who are caring for her. We cannot ask for anything more.

Due to Alexa's age, finding an adoptive home was difficult. However, there are situations, like rehab centers, group homes and nursing homes, where the presence of a gentle loving dog is valuable, but the resources are lacking to support the care of a dog. Through the work of a tireless MAGSR volunteer we were able to match a group home with a needy dog, Alexa! As part of the commitment we have for our dogs, Alexa will remain a "permanent foster" while enjoying the surroundings of a loving home with multiple caring persons sharing their lives with her.

MAGSR will pay for her medical care and other necessities so that she can enjoy the benefits of living in a home in her senior years.

Your tax deductible donations for ALEXA and deserving dogs like her, will enable MAGSR to continue to find creative ways to find homes for deserving dogs.

Update: June 4, 2009 -
It is with heavy heart to announce that Alexa has passed away this morning at 3am. She was in the loving arms of her foster Mom Nancy from the group home. Alexa passed on knowing she was loved by Nancy and her husband Ken who adopted her. Alexa will now be waiting at the bridge so they can cross together.

Bessie is a sweet, sweet, gentle adult lady German Shepherd dog. She does remind one of a "Grand Old Dame" when you look at her. She has a regal and dignified air about her! :) Not a pup anymore, but not an old fogey either! :) Bessie still enjoys those nutty runs around the yard and a romp or two with her people. Bess is quiet, calm and steady. Walks well on the leash and enjoys being with people and just hanging out. She will need just a brush up on her training - just enough to cement that bond of trust that is so important....And, she will need some reassurance that her paws are now placed firmly in her forever home. Won't you give this serene and sweet lady another chance? Ask to meet Bessie - she is waiting for her foster or forever home now.

DESCRIPTION: Dunn came to the rescue along with his brother Brooks. They were surrendered to the shelter by their family because the family is leaving the country. Dunn was raised almost exclusively outdoors, and may have a bit of a language problem as the owners spoke to the dogs only in their native tongue--not English. He is a diamond in the rough - just like brother Brooks! He is also quite shy and definitely is in need of some socialization. He is friendly and sweet, very sensitive and is so anxious to please, it just tugs at your heart. Dunn is the larger of the two - and he is going to be a very large dog when he reaches maturity! He is less than friendly towards small dogs and cats, and we are recommending that he does not share a home with them! :) Dunn will need a loving and patient home - Love, patience, structure and consistency and a dedicated commitment to training will bring this beautiful young dog to his full potential in no time at all. Dunn is waiting to whistle a country tune with you - Come and meet this beautiful young dog...He will steal your heart!

DESCRIPTION
: Pretty little Truffles has led a carefree life -  sort of. :)  She has always run loose, has never been in a home, just a yard.  Had no collar, never saw a leash until her rescuer put one on her -- and she was not too happy about that, but quickly did settle down after a bit.  She is what you would call a blank slate.  :)  A pup that has to learn everything!  She is a beautiful, beautiful little girl and very friendly.  She was formerly known as Sweet Pea - and we do think she is a sweetie, yes we do -- and since she came to us so close to Valentine's Day - she is now named for a very sweet and delightful treat! Little Truffles needs a home.  She needs training and stability and consistency and love...and patience, too.  Truffles will be a quick study, we are sure.  She is very definitely a dog that wants to please her people. Ask to meet this lovely free spirit.  She will take your breath away...she is a looker!

Update 05/04: Truffles is an adorable little dog who loves a good snuggle! People are her favorite thing! She did well with children this weekend and adores attention! OK, so cats and little dogs are not Truffles thing. But a nice big dog could be Truffles best friend! She is learning about car rides and did great at Petsmart this weekend. She is a fabulous dog and did great on her first M&G - you'd think she'd been to lots of events, she was so sweet (like chocolate truffles) and composed. Her little eyes lit up every time someone came to the table and she snuggled up on the laps of everyone. Truffles loved the men, the ladies, and all the children! She is truly a gem not to be missed!

DESCRIPTION: Hondo is a sweet and gentle boy....Cute, on the small side, peppy and now a happy fella.  He had been taken from his owners because they did not care for him properly and he was in trouble and in pain.  The chain link collar he had on was about 3 or 4 sizes too small and had to be surgically removed from his neck.  It had grown under the skin -- and it did not make Hondo feel good at all.  Hondo has forgiven everyone -- as is the nature of dogs.  He is ready to move on with his life and is actively seeking a new home.  Hondo has been an outside / tied dog most of his short life and so he has to learn his "inside manners" -- and outside manners, too! :)  He needs to know how to walk nicely on a leash -- he is so glad to be with you and so glad to on a walk that he is just beside himself to see the whole world in 20 minutes! :)  Yup, he will need some training - and he will love you for it, and probably excell! :)  Hondo has not been treated well, he deserves to be loved and taken care of from now on.  He is waiting now to interview possiblities for a new, permanent home.  Can he pencil you in?  Come and meet Hondo!

Update 05/04 : Hondo has been enjoying home life for a little over week and has been learning inside manners. This is a happy, happy dog that already knows his place. He gets along very well with people and any other dog, even if the other dog tries to pick a fight with him, in which case he simply backs off. Hondo is the center of attention at the dog park because he is so playful and friendly! He walks fairly nicely on a leash and only needs a little more work until he doesn't pull at all. He is learning basic obedience. Hondo is also housebroken. This dog loves the great outdoors and would be great for an active family with kids.

DESCRIPTION:  Lucky definitely got lucky in the nick of time. He was taken into rescue with very little time to spare.....one day before that "final" day! Lucky is a wonderful little guy! The shelter staff just loved him and really tried very hard to make sure he made it out! :) He was turned into the shelter because his family was moving and could not take him.

UPDATE!: Lucky is simply a charming little dog who loves to snuggle, chew bones and play ball! He is the perfect dog to take to a dog park as he adores playing with other dogs. He and the cat have come to an understanding. Lucky will chase the cat but the cat has permission to chase back! Luck Luck's favorite spot to sleep is under the foot rest of the recliner chair. He will happily nap there for hours. He is also a big fan of sleeping cuddled up to you on the bed. If necessary, he will consent to sleep on a doggy bed on the floor. Don't wait to meet Lucky!

UPDATE: We have discovered that Lucky is on springs! He can jump from a standing position to at least 5 feet straight up! He gets so excited to see you when you come home that he cannot contain himself and just has to celebrate! No townhouses or apartments for Lucky. He is small but has a big voice! Lucky loves other dogs and is a player with the ladies!

DESCRIPTION: Hi! My name is Georgia -- and no, the last name is not Brown, but I am very, very sweet! :) Have come upon some bad luck lately and found my self in a shelter....not good at all! No sir! But I made friends; and with my winning disposition and charm asked them to get me to a place where someone would see the great dog that I am and take me home forever.  Well, here I am -- and my friends will tell you that I am a very nice girl, not flashy, but rather calm and steady.  I need a bit of refresher work in the training department, but I do have a very high doggy IQ if I do say so myself.  I am a quick study and I love people.  I get along ok with other dogs, and while I did see those other furry, smelly things that are known as cats while at the shelter, I did leave them alone -- didn't get too close, so I can't really say if I would be best friends with one or not.  Anyway, I would love a permanent home, a soft bed, some good food and fresh water, some treats, (not too many - my figure, you know), -- and a family that will commit to me forever.  I have had enough of the wandering life and I am definitely ready to settle down.

Update: Georgia Peach welcomes early Spring in her foster home, hoping that this is her season to find her forever home! She is our sweet, sweet girl – with her sunny disposition and lively nature it’s impossible not to smile along with her! Georgia has perfected her house manners in search of her forever family and home – she is house-trained, crate-trained and loves her foster brother-dogs and her toys. She is a power-chewer, but has never chewed on anything inappropriate in my home (she does, however, love to destroy her toys!). Georgia went to the U-Serve dog wash a week or so ago, and had a much-needed bath; she was an excellent girl in the tub and didn’t try to get out even once. Others who knew her in the Rescue previously have told me she loves water, so she should be fun in the summertime. Georgia also attends basic obedience classes every week with me, and loves to show off what she has learned. She picks up the commands quickly, and obviously wants to please me by doing so. She knows “heel”, “sit”, “down”, “sit-stay” and we are working with “stand” – all of this has been easy to train with her. Georgia is not well-suited for a household with cats or small dogs, as her prey drive is high. She does very well with my two boys, but they are very tolerant, and she obviously wants to be the “woman-in-charge” of them. I think she would be best suited in a household as the only female dog, or at best, with a very submissive female dog. We work daily on behaviors that keep her alpha nature in check, as Georgia is very smart and would easily take advantage of a family who allowed her to do so. Training is vital for this girl to coexist well with her family. She is eager to learn and loves to please, and responds to either praise or treats as positive reinforcement for good behavior. Friends who train their dogs in agility have remarked to me that Georgia may be well-suited to this discipline, once her obedience skills are sharpened, because of her focus, determination and athletic build. She would likely love to learn these skills, and respond well, I think… Georgia asked if she could contribute to this profile, so here’s her say…

“I’m lively and smart. I have a good heart. And I’d love my own family. With maybe some kids, who love to play ball And a doggy companion, or three?” “You could take me to school, where I’d learn to be “cool” And to listen to your every command. I know “sit” and “down”; I’m never a clown, And I love to practice my “stand”. “I don’t need much, Just a kind, but firm, touch. And I promise to be all I can be. I’ll make you proud; you’ll wanna sing out loud! Isn’t there someone out there for me?”

Update: Georgia Peach continues to live with her foster family this Spring, and she welcomes in the summer months with characteristic zeal! She remains an active, lively, healthy and happy girl, who embraces each new challenge I give her. Georgia and I completed our series of beginner obedience classes this past Spring, and she earned her well-deserved diploma! Although she was approved for, and is ready for, the second series of obedience classes, I decided to enroll her in basic classes again, to strengthen her responses to basic commands, and provide the most socialization for her (this class was predicted to have > 25 dogs enrolled!). Georgia seems unfazed by this mass of strange-to-her dogs, and listens to me very well when heeling, sitting, etc. Her attention in class is correctly focused on her handler. She remains easy to train, and anxious to please. I think training with this girl will be very fulfilling for her future family.

To better prepare her for family life, I’ve continued to take her to meet/greets as our schedule allows, and we recently attended MAGSR’s adopter’s reunion as well. Georgia seems to love to meet new people, and is receptive to children as well (under supervision). I think her energy level might be too much for the very young or the very old. She does not care for, and is not approved for, a home with smaller dogs but she gets along very well with her German Shepherd foster brothers, and plays with the younger one every day. Georgia Peach would likely love a home with another big dog playmate. At a recent meet/greet we attended, Georgia showed great interest in the disc play demonstrations, and was approved by the vendors to be their beginner demonstration dog to the audience in attendance. She shows a natural ability for this, retrieving the disc every time it was handed to her, slid, or rolled across the ground. To my knowledge, this was her first experience with disc play. With her drive, determination, focus and athletic build, I feel she would shine if trained in this sport, and could be very competitive. Afterwards, since it was a hot day, Georgia Peach and I headed to the baby pools set up for the dogs to cool-off – she proceeded to lie down, stretch out, and relax in the water, showing that she knows how to beat the hot summer heat! Others who knew her in the rescue previously have told me that she loves the water, and loves to swim.

Although Georgia Peach loves her life with us, her heart’s desire is for a home of her own, with her own family, who will provide her with exercise, training, structure, loving discipline and lots of love. She promises loyalty, devotion, lots of laughs, and to love you back, without question! Are you the family looking for her? She’s right here, waiting for you… Come fall in love with her!

Wiley

more pics Click here for more pictures

DESCRIPTION: Meet Wiley!  He is a neat looking (handsome, very handsome), young boy that loves children, is housebroken and is in search of a home!  He was adopted from the shelter and returned a year later because he kept escaping from his owner -- and getting lost -- and then getting picked up by the animal police! :)  He was very happy in his home, loved his family and is wishing that his owners had put up a proper fence.....and had taken the time to teach him a little more about staying within his boundaries.   He is ready for a new life and a new family.  Wiley is a fun dog that will just love to go on family outings and trips with his people.  He is going to need some training.  He wants to make sure that his people know just how to keep him safe and happy. He would just love a foster home, preferably one with a nice fence so he won't be too, too tempted! :) Come and meet Wiley.

UPDATE: Sweet Wiley is in foster with me, I couldn't go to the kennel each weekend and see his sweet happy face and not bring him home with me! He is housebroken and sweet and loveable! He is crate trained and loves to play! He has excellent house manners (doesn't jump on people or furniture) and is learning to go up and down stairs!

He plays wonderfully with one of my dogs and their rough and tough tumbling and running tires them out in a few minutes until they start all over again!

He knows how to sit and walks well on a leash. Wiley will probably no exceed 45-50 lbs and with his shorter coat, doesn't shed nearly as much as a regular GSD! If you are looking for a lovable and friendly mid size GSD-mix, please ask to see Wiley!

UPDATE: I've had the pleasure of spending numerous weekends with Wiley. And I must say this boy is such a great pup. He is lovable, social, and gets along great with other dogs, people and children. He would make a great addition to any family, large or small. He's smart, obedient, and loves kisses. He thinks he's a lap dog. He is great at events and would make a great jogging partner or just hangin out and watch a good movie or go for a car ride. Don't miss meeting Wiley, he won't last long. Check out his pics.

DESCRIPTION: Tamu is a gorgeous, gorgeous girl who to meet her you'd think she was a strapping young thing.  Tamu and Sabre came from a home after the sudden and unexpected death of their devoted owner this week.  These two dogs meant the world to Lewis (their dad) so MAGSR is committed to finding them the perfect homes.

Update: Hi everyone.  Tamu here.  Usually my foster mom writes these updates, but since this month marks my two-year anniversary at MAGSR waiting for my forever home, I'm taking over!  The nice folks at MAGSR said that I might even get my own Blog soon since I've had such a long list of updates these last two years.  My foster mom mentioned I might even need my own Blackberry to keep the Blog current, which sounds pretty tasty to me, especially if it's served with a little yoghurt.
My eye doctor said my synthetic eye lenses are doing just great since surgery last May, but somehow I wound up back at the dog hospital for more surgery just last week -- this time on my leg, side and chest. I guess my leg was kind of banging into a big lump on my side, and I wasn't as graceful on my walks as I used to be.  All the lumps seem to be gone now, but I have to wear this big blue thing around my neck!  And I'm not allowed to chase squirrels or try to get the cat. I find this all very frustrating, but I'm working hard to be patient and good and rest all day listening to nice classical music in my room.  Maybe I'll get to recuperate in a new home with a new family soon.  I think that would be fun!

Update: Hi everyone! I'm all recovered from my recent surgeries, though I'm still missing quite a bit of hair on one side, but it's growing back in. Thanks to the nice folks at MAGSR, I have a sporty plaid coat to keep me warm and dry while I play in the snow. I also have a nice foster home to hang my coat up in to dry when I'm done romping and eating snow, but I'd love to grab a coat hanger at your house, kick up my paws and stay permanently!

Update: There's no more snow to snuffle, so I'm taking time to stop and smell the camellias. I have a nice camellia bush in my foster home's back yard. Spring is here -- a time to celebrate new beginnings, and I'd like to celebrate a new beginning with you in a forever (feline-free please) home. In the meantime though, life is good, just where I am. Thanks MAGSR!

DESCRIPTION:  Chenille lived all her life with one family and had no intention of ever, ever leaving them. Her owners unfortunately, lost their home and had to put her in a shelter. Chenille was very unhappy at the shelter. She is a nice, home-body type dog. She loved her people, she loved her home. She is housebroken and loves being a family pet. She is a settled lady, not a wild child by any means. Chenille would love a nice bed, some good food - she kinda loves food a bit much :) -- and some folks who will take her for walks and talk to her and just appreciate the great dog that she is. Chenille is now in her foster home and settling in. Her foster mom will update with more information and new pictures soon. Ask to meet this very pretty lady.

Update: Chenille is a wonderful girl that is housebroken and very sensative, if you correct her she is heartbroken. She plays with her foster siblings and runs around with them chasing them through the yard. She loves to be with people and is very calm and respectful. She has the tendency to be bossy but responds immediately to correction. She missed her other home terribly for the first week, always searching for someone or something, now she seems to have adjusted and settled in.

sebastian

more pics Click here for more pictures

DESCRIPTION:  Sebastian has lived his whole life up until now with a family. Over time that family increasingly had less and less time to spend with him and he grew frustrated and bored. He had little room to run and very little opportunity for long walks and exercise. However, as with most working breed dogs, Sebastian is very intelligent, alert and adept at exploring; and also is in tune to all that is going on around him. Because of this, training is absolutely essential. Training is the tool that lays the foundation for a good relationship between human and canine. It has been said that you should not adopt a dog with a higher activity level than yourself. From observation, Sebastian's activity level should be medium-high. He is basically a typical shepherd, needing the social interaction of his pack. He needs a family to love him -- and not just because he has a pretty face :) -- but because he is an awesome dog with unlimited potential and has so much to give! Sebastian is very smart, takes direction well and responds beautifully to a leader. His adopters will need to be active, confident and attend training so that he understands that they are in control. Otherwise he will assume the alpha position of his pack. Sebastian will need a strong leader and will eventually excel at obedience training. He wants only to please his people, and his people must take that leadership role very seriously and commit to training with him so that he will live up to that potential! Sebastian is vocal and energetic and absolutely gorgeous! Because of his energy level, we recommend that he go to a family with older children only. Ask for Sebastian! He will be waiting to meet you.

Update: Sebastian has a very high ball drive and would be an excellent candidate for S&R or some kind of working dog situation. He can only be adopted to an experienced GSD person with experience with high drive dogs.

DESCRIPTION: Moose lost his home because he made people he lived with sneeze and cough, and their eyes itch. Can you imagine? Such a nice guy and he is out on his ear because of such a little thing like that! Hmmph. He needs to learn some manners and all about being a canine good citizen and how to walk on a leash, how to properly greet people without jumping up, and how to share his toys. He is very fond of his toys and needs a little refresher course in sharing. Moose is willing to learn --he is so ready to move on. He is a sweet and friendly boy and with some training with his people under his collar, this boy will shine! Moose will make a great family dog to take on walks and hikes and to the beach! Moose is waiting to shake your paw.

Update: I've spent this entire weekend with Moose. He was our houseguest and host for our meet & greet @ Dundalk Petsmart. And i must say, he was the perfect gentleman, and i say GENTLE MAN. He loves children and kids of all ages, and gets along with other dogs. He may be young but he walks great on a leash, never pulls. He takes treats very gently. He has not had an accident in my house. He doesn't mind the crate, and sleeps thru the night. He loves being with you OUTSIDE. He would be a great pet for anyone who is an outside person or family. He loves car rides. He gets a bit mouthy sometimes, but adjusts quickly to correction, (he is still very young). Of course training is a must, to secure the bond with this absolutely loveable pup. He will shower you with kisses. Ask to meet Moose now, he won't last long.

DESCRIPTION: Turbo is just a wonderful boy! He was very much loved and formerly lived very happily with his person - who unfortunately now works long hours and nights and does not have time for him anymore. His former owner wanted to make sure that he would find a good home that would love him and give him all the time that he deserves....he is just a great dog! Turbo knows some commands, but will need some further training to cement that bond between owner and dog that is so important. He is trained on an invisible fence, and he is fine with the kitties and other dogs. Turbo loves to ride in a car, play ball and swim. This is a fantastic family dog who is just waiting for the right folks to come along. Ask to be introduced. Turbo is waiting to take you for a spin!

DESCRIPTION: Cooley has just arrived - is unpacking his bags, settling his paws and checking things out. It was a very long trip! Whew! He is a very handsome, dude indeed!- White with a hint of tan. :) Very nice! Cooley is looking for a home that will be his forever now. He is a smart and loyal dog, a mite stubborn, but willing to give his people the benefit of the doubt. He will make a wonderful family dog. All he will need is the guidance and patience and love of his people. He does need training - and that is a given - but he will do famously, we are convinced. Cooley is a typical adult GSD, past the baby, goofy puppy stages, but would still like to be a large part of his family's life. Active small children make him a trifle anxious, so we recommend that he does go to a home with no or older children. Long walks, some quality time in the backyard...and, oh yeah, how about teaching him to play ball? :) Ask to meet this good looking guy! He is waiting to shake paws!

DESCRIPTION: Dodger is breathtaking! Drop dead gorgeous to be exact. He is smart, friendly and very, very active. He doesn't sit still for long and he is always on the go. Dodger needs an active family one willing to devote their time to keep him exercised and stimulated. He needs training and he also needs a family with GSD experience. He has excellent leash manners and is very eager to learn. His previous owners told us that he is an expert at getting out of the yard and can climb a normal sized chain link fence. A tall fenced yard is a must for Dodger. Unfortunately this boy does not know what bones or toys are but is learning quickly. He has become pretty attached to a large tug ball that he has declared his own. He certainly keeps himself busy with it all day long. Ask to see this handsome boy today you will not be disappointed.

DESCRIPTION:  Cher and her brave brother were rescued from a rural shelter where their future was very grim, indeed. They are two adorable puppies who deserve a chance to have a long, happy and fun filled life with a great family. Adopting a puppy is a serious business here at MAGSR. This is a commitment of about 12+ years and we want their new home with their adoptive parents to be their last. Puppies are a pain! They require a great deal from their families. But, oh, the rewards are so fulfilling! Cher is a cute and wiggly, squirmy and kissy, kissy girl. :) Won't you give this little sprite a chance at a great life? Cher is resting now in her foster home, checking things out, sniffing and smelling. :) Ask to meet our newest, little one - She is a doll.

UPDATE: Cher is a VERY sweet puppy!! She loves people! She likes to play with my 3 and 4 year old kids; following them all around the yard. She is a little scared of my bigger dogs; looking to me for guidance. When I hold her in my arms, she likes to snuggle her head into my neck. Her kisses are very gentle and sweet. I think she is a good sized dog for only 10 weeks, but she moves with agility and grace. She's a dainty girl:)

UPDATE (4/14/09): It's been 1 whole week since we got Cher, and she's already a part of our family! She is playing with my GSD Rosie all the time! It is so cute to see her tearing around the backyard and playing tug of war. She is gentle with my kids and older dog Sammie. Thankfully, she sleeps through the night and has never had an accident in her crate. We affectionately call her, "Puppy Pancakes"…she's just so sweet you want to eat her up. She loves her toys and will run to get certain ones for her and Rosie to play tug with. When it's mealtime, she waits patiently for her food and doesn't inhale it. What a little lady she is! Her fur is super soft, like rabbit's fur and she's a hit with the neighborhood kids. For such a young pup, she acts like a much older dog. It's striking to tell you the truth how mature she is…she is just a treasure to have.

Neena

EClick here for more pictures

DESCRIPTION: Neena is a very lovely and lively young lady that has been returned to us because her family had to relocate and could not take her with them.  She is a very friendly girl and would do well in any family type situation.  She seems to know the basics -- sit, down, etc., but training again is always important when adopting a new pup.  Neena is looking forward to the coming spring and summertime with a new place to rest her paws!  Come and hang out a bit with Ms. Neena -- enjoy the sunshine -- have a nice talk! :)  I am sure she will amaze you with her stories! :)  Neena is a great girl, just waiting for the right people to come along......could be you!

Update: Neena is adjusting to her new foster home.  After putting up a little bravado, Neena has realized that she's not the pup in charge and is now starting to prove she really does understand her commands. She is a smart dog! Her leash manners are very good, "sit" and "down" need to be stated firmly, not a request.  Neena LOVES attention and readily rolls over for the tummy rub.  She is completely housebroken and does well in her crate.   Neena has lots of energy and would be an ideal jogging partner or romper with the kids.  Since she does enjoy being close to her humans, settling down at your feet will bring a grateful and loving gaze.

Update: It's been about a month now since Neena came into foster and she is completely settled in. She has learned her place in the pack and earned the privilege of sleeping on her own bed in our bedroom. Her fur siblings are nearby on their beds as well. We have begun off leash training and I am happy to report that Neena is proving herself to be trustworthy, and obedient when I call her to return. Neena amazes me with her intelligence and loyalty. She loves the kids in the neighborhood, as well as the other dogs. Iam especially pleased with the fact that there have been no "accidents" in the house. When Neena needs to relieve herself she will stand near a door and bark unitl I say "outside". Neena is still a "people" dog, loving nothing more than being close to her humans.

Special Update: The Columbia Petsmart will provide a complimentary 8 week obedience class to Neena's new owner!

DESCRIPTION: Jazz is a very handsome and sweet young man!  His only vice, it appears, is that he has an affinity for jumping over 4' fences and escaping the yard! :)  He is wonderful with children, loves everyone he meets and is a very well mannered and a polite and gentle dog.  Jazz will make some lucky family a wonderful pet and companion.  He has some problem now with his eyes which may be due to a blockage in one or both tear ducts -- and this will be checked out and taken care of in the very near future.  Jazz is waiting for his forever family now - hopefully a family with at least a 6' fence ! :)  He would love to meet you.

Update : Jazz is a great dog!  He is super friendly, loves kids and is great with other dogs and even cats.  He is in a foster home right now - and he fits right in.  His foster mom reports that he is a sweet and  playfull and a great dog to have around.  He was recently taken to an eye specialist to have his eyes assessed.  Apparently Jazz suffered some sort of injury or trauma to his right eye when he was younger.  He is blind in that eye, but that eye is otherwise ok - it does not cause the dog any pain or discomfort and he can see just fine with only one functioning eye. The eye doctor says that Jazz is good to go. :)  We will be using topical antibiotics to clear up the tearing that has resulted in the staining below his eyes. - This is easily taken care of by a product that is readily found in Pet stores and it is because he is a white dog that it is so visible.  All in all, Jazz is a fantastic young dog that is going to make some family very happy.  Ask to meet him now.  He is a keeper.

DESCRIPTION: Kadi - a very pretty little Lady is desperately seeking a change in circumstances.  Poor little girl has not had such a good start in life so far.  She had an owner who gave her away to someone who had to give her up because the resident dogs did not get along with Kadi and picked on her unmercifully.  She is beautiful and fairly well mannered, just a little shy - she is a young thing after all. :)  Kadi will need a family to give her stability and structure and teach her how to live up to her full potential.  She will require some training and most of all love.  Kadie would love a foster home while she is waiting for the right family to come along.  Ask to meet Kadie, you won't be disappointed.

Update: Kadi is just wonderful! She is a gorgeous purebred GSD who loves to play! She spent today "talking" to the other dogs around her and meeting anyone who came within her reach. She adores treats and really wants to be part of a family again. She walks well on a leash and is very smart. She will excel at obedience training! Don't wait, she won't be with us long!

DESCRIPTION: Pharaoh had a number of people pulling for him - working hard to get him safe and out of a shelter and into rescue where he would find a good home. This little boy is so sweet and a bit shy. And he is actually quite a big boy for his age, too. :) He is friendly, tho - and just loving life right now! :) Pharaoh is now in a loving foster home. He has fur siblings and nice humans and good food - can't ask for too much more now, can he? :) His foster mom will update with new pictures and news shortly.

Update 04/20 : Pharaoh is a fun-loving sweetheart and he's ready for that perfect family that will commit to loving him forever. He's a big young fella; energetic, inquisitive and enjoying this exciting world around him! There are many new things he's getting exposed and accumstomed to, and he's adjusting very well.

Pharaoh loves kids and loves to play with our 2 dogs. He enjoys fetch with the ball and frisbee, and loves romping through the grass and bushes. He sleeps contently on your lap or in the crate, and is house-trained. He is learning to walk on the leash and is working on his manners. Pharaoh is a lovebug. If you are looking for someone to love you and be your best friend, meet Pharaoh! He's sometimes puppy-bouncy and in need of some patient training and a few lessons in manners, but he's ready to love you forever!

Please be aware that puppies are rambunctious kids who need lots of training, patient leadership, a huge dose of fun, and loads of love! Please don't underestimate the time, patience, and consistency needed to raise a happy well-adjusted large breed puppy!

UPDATE: Hi, Pharaoh here. Rambunctious - phooey! I'm a bouncy yappy puppy like every other pup. Don't know much about this "manners" thing, but hey, are there any more mud puddles around? I really love it when it rains, the mud is cool! My foster mom keeps trying to wash it off me, I don't know why, I keep telling her there's plenty more of it where that came from! And boy do I love rolling in it with my foster brother and sister - they are loads of fun! My foster mom gets a funny look on her face though when all 3 of us come to the door with muddy paws - seems to me she should get with the program and just enjoy our boundless love and muddiness!!! Got pup?

DESCRIPTION: Landon is a nice big boy - kind of shy and a little scared right now - not knowing just what is going on in his life.  He was left in the drop box (overnight pen) at a shelter....so not much is known about him, and it certainly is not a good way to end a relationship, is it?   From what we can tell, this handsome boy has led a rough life and is ready for a change.  He is not a jumper, not a wild child, but he does like to sing! :)  He has a great voice and serenaded his ride from the shelter with some wonderful show tunes! ;)  What a talented guy!  We are sure that with the proper love and care and some training that you could have a real find here!  Maybe you could teach him to talk! :D  Landon is polishing his repertoire and getting ready to meet his public....ask him for an audition - he is a great boy!

Update: Landon came into foster with me tonight. He is a simply gorgeous black GSD who has a wonderful natural stance. He appears to know some basic obedience and really wants to please. He is slightly shy at first but warms up quickly with treats! He has seen the cat from a distance and will be getting a little closer tomorrow. He was shy of the steps but once given some encouragement, he tackled them like a champ! He went right into his crate, ate his dinner, and went to sleep.

Update: Landon is doing just great. He gets along will all my other dogs, is crate trained, housebroken and loves to learn! He doesn't care for the kitty cat very much, but that's ok, that kitty cat doesn't like him either! Landon spent all day at the Adopter's Reunion, and was as good as gold! He's conked out on the living room floor, sleeping like a champ. He's a fabulous dog who can't be missed!

DESCRIPTION: Nakota is a handsome, tail-wagging, friendly young man who has not let his recent pain and suffering hamper his personality. Nakota belonged to a family with children and was once an "inside" dog, but as happens so frequently, he eventually became an "outside" dog.
Poor Nakota suffered a broken toe after having his foot run over by a ATV. His family took him to the vets, where a cast was put on his foot. As with any dog, Nakota began chewing at his cast (they did not put an e-collar on him or go back for ANY follow up visits to have the cast and wound checked over). Several days later, a family member removed his cast and put duct tape on his leg instead....and left him. Over a period of 4 weeks, Nakota lost circulation to his hock and foot. Can you even imagine the pain and discomfort this poor boy must've experienced? FINALLY, someone noticed raw flesh creeping out from under the tape, so they took him back to the vets....about 3 1/2 weeks too late!!! The ER vet said Nakota's injuries were some of the worst she has seen in her 20+ years of trauma practice. Two of Nakota's toes were dead, he had no skin at all from his hock to his toes, all of his flesh had rotted off and severe infection had set in. I saw Nakota's foot, and saw a horrific site of exposed bone, tendon and cartilage. His center foot pad had completely rotted off. Upon removing the tape and trying to clean the wound (and bring down his fever), the vet suggested that Nakota be surrendered to their office, so they could find him a home that would cover the expenses his medical needs would incur. The lady signed Nakota over...and the doctor called MAGSR.
Nakota was taken to a specialist, where the surgeon is doing everything he possibly can to save Nakota from losing his left rear leg. On 6/22, Nakota had his first surgery...and his 2 remaining healthy toes were amputated, so those toes pads that still had blood flow, could be moved, in hopes of giving Nakota that big foot pad that he must have to support his weight. He went back for a check-up and bandage change yesterday. New tissue is starting to grow and one of the wound is trying to heal. The relocated toe pads appear to be receiving blood flow. Nakota will need to go back to the surgeon every 3 days to have his wounds checked and his dressing changed. Right now, Nakota is on crate restriction and needs to be kept quiet for 8 weeks. He is at my home recovering and his spirits are good. He is an active young dog, who is confused about all he's had to face in the past few weeks. In spite of his pain and confusion, Nakota still wags his tail as people come and go, and give kisses by the dozen.
MAGSR has once again, taken in a dog with medical needs....and Nakota's vet bills are not cheap. However, Nakota has suffered enough, and we at MAGSR felt he deserved a second chance. We WERE his only chance. If possible, please consider making a donation in Nakota's name...or even becoming his sponsor. You generosity will allow us to help even more dogs, even though some of our current dogs, like Nakota, are expensive!
Please help us, help those who are so desperate for love, kindness and another chance, after they were so mistreated by the hands of another human being.
Check back soon for more updates...

Update: Nakota was seen by Dr. Keats today, and finally had his sutures removed. His relocated toe pads, appear to be receiving blood flow and healthy at this time. His mutliple wounds continue to close and shrink in size--it is not known if skin grafting will be necessary. Nakota moves about like nothing is wrong. He loves to chase his tennis balls and carry his *pink* piggy around with him, showing off! He is in good spirits, considering what he's been through!! Nakota has settled in nicely in my home, with quite a few other fur sisters and brother with whom to share his space. He loves his alone time with me, laying on my bed for tummy rubs and spoiling. Hopefully, next week, Nakota will have his hard cast removed, and transition to just wearing a soft bandage. Time will tell if his "new" foot will be functional. Nakota isn't out of the woods yet--if the remaining foot is not functional, then he could still lose his leg. Nakota is quite a character and has an amazing personality and gentle way about him. He loves riding in the car, meeting new people and playing ball. He loves his crate and spends the night in it, without ever complaining. Nakota is going to make someone a wonderful companion!

Update: Nakota has made it through 3 surgeries on his foot, to save his leg! A tough patient, indeed...but a sweet, loving boy without question! Nakota continues to require weekly check-ups with his very favorite Dr. Keats, to monitor his progress. At this time, all casts and bandages are OFF! Nakota is still very "interested" in his foot and likes to lick, lick, lick! He can not yet be trusted alone without a cervical collar AND a muzzle, when crated during the work day. Throughout this entire ordeal, Nakota has been the best boy in the whole world. He accepts his fate everyday, when he is fitted with his collar and muzzle. All of Nakota's toes have been amputated and his only 2 healthy pads have been relocated to the end of his "stump" in an attempt to give him something to stand/bear weight on. These pads are still very tender and bleed frequently if he walks on hard or rough surfaces. He has managed to wear a blister on the end of one of his pads, so now he spends most of his uncrated time, wearing a soft fleece sock. This poor fella has quite a collection of socks! If left unsupervised, he wastes no time taking the sock OFF! :) Nakota is very tolerant of me handling his foot, (applying medication, looking at it, and putting in a sock). Despite his multiple surgeries, discomfort and frustration, he has never been less than an angel (except the several times he wiggled out of his collar and chewed on his foot-ugh)!! Nakota loves his siblings (2 other GSD's, a blind hound and a spry old basset hound) and never has any issues with other dogs. He's not a huge fan of squirrels, though! Those pesky critters entertain him (and his siblings) for hours! This boy loves nothing more than to be near his person, in the company of his housemates, laying in bed for a good night scratch, watching and listening to Animal Planet, chasing and parading around with a variety of toys (especially his pink alligator) and settling in for the night-happy to be OUT of his crate and his "uniform". He loves to go for rides, and clearly recognizes the beltway exit, that leads to the vets office! This jovial, fun-loving boy still needs some more time to heal before he'll be ready for adoption. When the ordeal of mulitple foot surgeries and healing are a memory, he'll be facing a slightly difficult neuter (one testicle is internal). I haven't told him about that yet! I have fostered many, many dogs over the years, and I'd have a tough time thinking of a dog with a sweeter disposition than Nakota! He is a favorite everywhere he goes! He loves when people stop by to visit, loves kids and enjoyed a recent trip to the pumpkin patch on our farm. I can't recall a single person he's met, that he hasn't liked. He sounds-off with the rest of my 'pack' when someone knocks, but quickly greets with a wagging tail. Nakota is a perfect example of how resilient dogs can be. He did not deserve the neglect he has suffered, or the long, trying road to recovery...which we are still traveling. I am proud of how he still continues to shine!

Update:  Nakota has healed nicely from his foot surgeries! This sweet boy has put his foot traumas behind him! Even though his foot has healed nicely, it is still tender and needs to be covered by a sock in the house, and a boot when he's outside. He loves to chase his tennis balls and play with his doggie siblings. His 'running around' time has to be limited so he doesn't 'rough-up' his foot. He has the best personality ever! He loves everybody and everything-except small, furry, fast-moving critters. Probably not the dog for a home with cats! Nakota is now fighting allergies and has been seeing a dermatologist. He is undergoing food trials to narrow down the cause of his allergies. Once again, he is taking this newest problem in stride and is still a happy, goofy boy! He loves to go for walks, loves to go for car rides and has now taken to sleeping in bed with his foster mommy. Nakota will send in another update once we have a handle on his allergy situation.

Update 01/19: Nakota continues to be one of the best dogs I've ever shared my home with! He loves laying in front of the fire, watching the squirrels and of course, following Mommy around. Nakota's foot had been doing very well---well enough that he could go about his day without having to wear his sock. Nakota's foot is very tender and can not handle the normal pounding on hard surfaces, like other dogs can. He's not supposed to walk on sidewalks, asphalt or pavement because these hard surfaces cause trauma to his tender 'stump'. Now that the ground is frozen, it too has become a 'rough surface' and has caused Nakota's foot to begin bleeding and ulcerating again. Of course, Nakota takes it like champ! He's back to wearing his socks again (his Ravens sock is his favorite), when he goes outside to do his business. He tries to sneak off and lick his foot in private, but I'm on to his tricks! We are back to soaking his foot in Epsom Salt and applying antibiotic salve before bedtime. This will be an issue for Nakota for the rest of his life. He does leave little bloody 'stump prints' around the house from time to time! :) My steam cleaner has become our best friend! :) In addition to the trouble his foot causes him, Nakota also suffers from food allergies. He can not have regular dog food or treats. He is on a special (expensive) dog food and will need to be for life. Even sneaking one or two stray kibbles of food from my other dogs, can cause an itchy allergic reaction. His dog food costs about $86 per bag! Just when you'd think nothing else could happen to this poor boy, it was discovered that Nakota is possibly suffering from some type of auto-immunde deficiency syndrome-such as Discoid Lupus or Pemphigus. Neither of these disorders have been 'diagnosed', but he exhibits many of the characteristics of Pemphigus (ie: swollen anal area, swollen and crusty lip folds, hair loss, severe facial itching). In the past 5 -6 months, Nakota has had 2 of these outbreaks. A biopsy was not done to provide a definitive diagnosis, but his symptoms were pretty classic. Nakota is about to undergo additional vet visits, to find out exactly WHAT he has...and why he's back to itching and biting at himself. He even tries to scratch himself in his sleep. We've started using a humidifier at our house, hoping to bring some relief to his itchy skin-in case the heat is causing him to have dry skin (although our other dogs do not show any symptoms). Nakota has endured a lot over the past year. It seems that once he clears one hurdle, something else surfaces. Right now, my itchy boy who's missing some hair on his ears and has thinning hair on his face, is sound asleep-dreaming of squirrels. Nakota would like to thank everyone who has made donations in his name. He knows he's a very expensive boy! I always tell him he's worth every penny! Further updates will be posted after additional vet visits.

DESCRIPTION:  Marvin and his friend Sweeps took a very long ride to come to rescue....and they sure are happy about it.  Marvin's life up to this point was not the best.  He is one  very, very skinny and ragged looking young man!  Marvin's entire existence was spent outside  in a backyard filled with junk, tied with a four foot chain to a ramshackle little shed -- and fed very infrequently.  He is, despite this, a wonderfully sweet and friendly boy who desperately needs a loving home!  With a little TLC, some good food and lots of lovin', this good ole country boy will just shine!  Marvin is sure to steal your heart -- He could sure use a foster home while he is waiting for his forever folks.   Come by and meet Marvin!

Update: Hi! Starvin Marvin here! :) Some of my close friends call me Marvelous Marvin, too! :) I arrived at MAGSR awhile ago, but had to stay at the vets for a bit because I was not in good shape at all! Skinny? Man! I gave skinny a new perspective! You could play a tune on my little ole ribcage! I still am a little bony -- but I am gaining weight and becoming more healthy looking every day. Those days of just hoping for a meal are well behind me! I am eatin good, feeling good, and lookin goooood! :) I am, if I must say so myself, a very cute and playful guy. I love everyone! I love to cuddle up to the ladies! The guys are ok, too, but the ladies smell better. I don't know beans about walking on a leash, but I am learning. I need some wonderful family to give me a home (inside, please), forever and to take me to training. There is so much I have to learn, but man, am I willing! Some of my doggy friends I could do without, but am told that with a proper introduction I do behave like a gentleman -- sometimes! :) I love to eat -- because I was starvin' :), and I promise to make someone a wonderful best buddy. Won't you come and meet me? I am all ready to go home now!

Update: So, it did not take marvelous Marvin long to become familiar with inside life! He is a wee darling.
He is enjoying the freedom to roam about outside and is very interested in all that we are doing inside. Has not had an accident inside yet! Very impressive! Neil has been taking him on his runs and he is learning when the short lead goes on its time for exercise. I took him to the pet store today and he got a new purple collar. Its fluffy on the inside and hopefully he will not eat this one! He did not like the car ride but I think the more I take him small runs he will get used to it. Marvin knows how to sit, stay, drop the ball, fetch the ball. He's a very clever boy and wants to do it all.

Update:Marvin has been with us now for 3 weeks. He is a joy to have around. He is putting on weight and is happy to share his yummy puppy food with his foster brother Ranger. He has met some of the neighbourhood
dogs and likes to play with them all. Marvin had a bath today, he liked it! He also loves to fetch a ball and has tons of energy. Marvin would be well suited with a family possibly with younger kids to play with. He is also a cuddly boy and likes to share the couch with you and watch TV.

DESCRIPTION: Nyla is a lovely young thing that is housebroken and has lived with a small dog and 2 cats.  Her people had some medical difficulties and had to give her up.  She is a nice friendly and outgoing girl and would welcome a family into her life again with open paws! :)  Nyla is still a puppy with many puppy mannerisms.  She has to learn not to jump up on people, even tho she loves them a lot..  :)  and learn to  sit, stay, and all that obedience stuff.  Yup,  all those things a pup has to learn to be a canine good citizen and make her family proud.   Nyla will shine!  Won't you give her a chance to show you just how wonderful she is?  Nyla is waiting now.

Update: Nyla is a very sweet young puppy. She wasn't too sure of getting into a sedan when I got her, but she is learning the car is ok. Nyla loves giving kisses. She is learning sit, stay, and down. She already knows what the word "No" means. Nyla likes to shake hands too. Nyla is staying with me and my cat, and hasn't chased or hunted for her since she's been here. She likes cat food, I got to remember to keep her away from the cat food.

Update: Nyla & my cat have been enjoying each others company.  I got them a new toy to play with, a laser pointer, and they both go crazy for it, especially Nyla.  When I am done playing with the laser she is still looking for the red dot on the floor wondering what happened to it.  Nyla enjoys her walks on the beach.  Nyla will need her new family to take her to training to learn manners while walking pass people.  She is very protective of me when we walk and I keep telling her no barking its ok for people to pass us.  She is young and so everything is new to her.  Nyla has accomplished the command "sit" and "down."  I am very pleased to say that Nyla has overcome her fear of getting into cars.  She gets into my car with no problem now.  She enjoys car rides to the park & beach.  Nyla is playful and great dog looking for her forever home.  Nyla loves having peanut butter stuffed kongs.

Update: Nyla had a play date with fellow MAGSR alum, Roscoe, on Friday & Saturday. Roscoe & Nyla enjoyed chasing each other around the backyard. Nyla is full of energy, fast, and plays rough. Ask Roscoe how many times she knocked him down to the ground. Nyla was exhausted after her play date, I took a cute picture of her knocked out sleeping in the car. Nyla will not do well in a home with small dogs. Nyla loves going to the beach with me. She loves running up and down the shore barking at the waves coming in. Nyla is a silly puppy dog. Past few days she has been bringing my sneakers to her dog bed, not chewing them, just making the floor look clear. I guess Nyla is cleaning up after me. Nyla is crated during the days I work but at night she sleeps next to me in my bedroom on the floor.
Abby, my cat, is wondering if anyone would like an energetic fun dog for their forever home?? Abby says, "Please fill out an adoption application and ask for Nyla."

DESCRIPTION: Sonny and his sis, Cher were rescued from a rural shelter where their future was very grim, indeed. They are adorable puppies who deserve a chance to have a long, happy and fun filled life with a great family. Adopting a puppy is a serious business here at MAGSR. This is a commitment of about 12+ years and we want their new home with their adoptive parents to be their last. Puppies are a pain! They require a great deal from their families. But, oh, the rewards are so fulfilling! Won't you give this cute little boy a chance at a great life? You can teach him tricks - in addition to the obedience stuff :) -- We promise it will be fun for all involved! And he will give you unconditional love forever. Such is the nature of a puppy! Come on out and meet Sonny.

Update: Hi everyone, i traveled a very long way to come to MAGSR.  They litterally saved my tail ! lol  I'm settling in with my foster family but am looking for my furever family.  I'm just a little guy, but my foster mom says i'm the best pup.  I'm not completely potty trained outside yet, but i haven't had one accident in the house. AMAZING huh?  I only cry a little bit at night in my crate when it's time for bed.  I don't wanna be alone anymore, but i know my foster family is there.  I am a very playful pup and have lots of toys to chew on.  I am still teething.  Oh and i have a VERY BIG foster fursibling, she's great and we get along very nicely.  Come and see me, we will fall in love.

DESCRIPTION: Moby is a gorgeous boy that is actively seeking a change in his life-style! Hard times happen. He landed in a shelter -- not good -- and is now with MAGSR -- better -- but he really, really needs a home! - and that would be the BEST! :) Moby needs some help with his manners -- he is a bit of a diamond in the rough, but he is after all a pup and must be taught and shown the way, so to speak! He is settling in right now with his foster folks and will be ready to meet and greet his fans very soon. Come on and meet Moby! He is a keeper!

Update: One cannot say that Moby lacks confidence. Every day he thinks of something new to get into: be it getting his nose sucked in by the shop vac or pulling my personal items from the laundry hamper and wearing them. All in all, he is doing well and we are having lots of fun with Mr. Moby. He gets along fine with our dogs although he was driving Argos crazy at first. He is a wonderful puppy who needs a job; as you can see from his list of adventures, Moby will make up his own job if you don't give him one. He has already put on 4 1/2 pounds since he moved in with us. I guess mischief makes him hungry!

Update: Moby is a smart, sweet, and rambunctious puppy. It is very difficult to summarize his personality because every day is an adventure for Moby and for us. One never knows what he is going to think of next. For example, I was using the shop vacuum on my dogs who shed fur as if they are getting paid for it by the pound. It took several years for my dogs to be comfortable around vacuum cleaners, much less the shop vac. It did not take Moby any time at all. He was curious right away and started jumping around it in the hopes that it would play with him. I put down the hose – vacuum still running - in order to brush out one of the dogs. Moby decided to sniff the hose and got his nose sucked in; he jumped into the air and the hose went flying. It was so darn funny; one would think that Moby would steer clear of the hose for a while; however, our smart little boy figured out that it is safer to paw at the hose rather than to sniff it and continued to play with it. Moby is not even intimidated by slippery floors. He has discovered that the pergo floor in our basement is great for skating. He now takes a running start of the steps and slides across the floor with his hind legs completely stretched out like a frog skimming across the water.
Moby needs a job: if I don’t give him something to do, he will come up with a task. It seems that on every walk, he rearranges the woods. He picks up entire branches (2-3 times his size) and drags them along until he decides to deposit them in the middle of the path or on the other side. Often, he looks like a mini-deer with the branches as his antlers. At home, he redistributes our shoes. He does not chew on them but simply spreads them out over the three levels in the house. Whether slippers or heavy boots, it makes no difference to Moby; if he cannot carry it, he will drag it.
When he grows up, Moby would like to be an agility champion or maybe a tracking dog. He is incredibly flexible and continuously amazes me with his jumping ability. It is as if he has rubber instead of bones. We are teaching him not to jump on us which he is prone to do. He has figured out that he is getting corrected for jumping and now resorts to fly-bys (jumping pas us rather than on us). We tried to confine Moby to the master bathroom during the night by putting up a 3-foot baby gate. He tolerated that for one night and then decided to jump over the gate. He did so from a stand still and easily cleared the gate; keep in mind that he is 5 months old; none of our previous fosters (not to mention our own dogs) ever did that. Since he has not had any accidents, we let him sleep in the bedroom with us; his favorite sleeping place is under the bed.
When we first got him, Moby was growling over his food and toys. He responded very well to correction and this quickly became a non-issue. He now eats his food and plays with his toys alongside our dogs; I can pet him or put my hand in his food bowl while he is eating without any issues. However, in order for these issues not to reemerge, Moby must have firm leadership. He is confident and smart and will challenge any boundaries if he is not convinced that they will be enforced. This – and his jumping skills – are the main reasons why he should not be in a family with small children. Moby is ideal for a physically active person/family who is interested in doing advanced dog training (be it obedience, tracking, agility, etc.). He is very playful with our dogs though he does annoy them with his tendency to jump over their backs. :-) If you share Moby’s sense of adventure and would like a devoted and smart companion, Moby is the one for you.

Update:Moby is a confident dog who likes to test the boundaries. He has quickly learned the rules in our house but likes to challenge them periodically. These challenges tend to take the form of resource guarding (for which he gets promptly corrected) and more subtle behavior indicative of his desire to dominate. Although Moby is responsive to correction, we expect that he will continue to put the rules to a test. As a result, Moby requires an owner who has experience with working breeds.

DESCRIPTION: Fred and his pal, Barney made it out just in time! Whew!  What an adventure they had!  So many people working to get these guys out of the shelter and into safety.  Fred is not the best smelling pup in the place right now, - but his foster is working on it!  Fred is very, very shy and timid, he apparently was not treated well at all and it shows.  It will take a while for him to get some confidence and trust the people around him....but he will - eventually.  He is a sweet boy and loves his resident foster doggy brother....and promises to be a wonderful family pet and companion.  His foster mom will update very soon with a much better picture and some more news.

UPDATE: Fred is a shy boy but he's coming out of his shell more and more every day. He's had a bath and smells MUCH better thank you! He is enjoying regular meals: whenever his foster mom goes near the counter where the dog food is prepared, Fred is right there waiting! He would be great in a home with adults or older children although he would likely do well in a patient family with younger children as well. He loves his foster fur brothers and sister  and seems to gain confidence from watching and interacting with them. He is curious but just fine with the cats. Fred is truly a diamond in the rough. Ask to meet him soon.

DESCRIPTION: Miss Scarlett has come to stay a spell with us - after having had a very long trip from way down south. She is as pretty as can be - a friendly, sweet little miss that needs a home desperately. Scarlett lived with a small child in a temporary foster home before coming to rescue, and her former foster mom described her as just about perfect. :) She gets along with everything! Scarlett is the type of dog that will bond very closely to her family. She is a soft dog, extremely trainable and very anxious to please her people. Did I mention that she is also gorgeous? She is definitely a beautiful Southern Belle. :)

Gladys

DESCRIPTION: This precious little girl was found in a plastic bag on the side of the road. We named her Gladys and brought her into MAGSR. Gladys had some paralysis in her back end which presented some challenges in her care. We resorted to diapers to keep her clean and dry then found we had to dress her in baby clothes to keep the diapers on. We took her to a specialist and the prognosis was devastating. Her paralysis was more extensive than we had believed. She only had feeling in 2 toes, the rest was unresponsive. The crushing news was a severe heart defect which explained her nonstop panting. It would only get worse as she grew. With great sorrow we had to say goodbye to Gladys. Gladys was adopted by her foster Patty and is now running free at the Bridge with Shasta and Patty's other puppies.

Run free, Gladys, you touched us all in your short life.

DESCRIPTION: Hero was given up because he was too much for the family's two little children.  He is a typical puppy with very sharp puppy teeth....not at all unusual, but the family realized that this was not a good move and decided to wait until the kids are older before getting a dog.  Hero is a little shy and wary of strangers, people on bikes and things that go boom in the night.  He does not like to share and needs some help with taking his treats gently.  Hero is after all a baby.  He has a lot to learn.  He needs structure and consistency and training to became the awesome dog that he will be in time.  He is hanging out in his foster home right now with a big fur buddy and 4 cats who he loves to tease and chase. They hate him! :)  Hero is smart, cute and a handful!

maya

sd Click here for more pictures

DESCRIPTION:  Mya (fka Marta) was returned because she could not get along with her canine housemates. Mya was involved in, and, in fact initiated several fights with the resident dogs resulting in injuries to the other dog.  For this reason we recommend her to be in a home as the only pet.  She is an older lady and may just simply want to be left alone by other dogs...and as a senior, we certainly respect that.  Mya was very much loved, she was part of an active family.  She enjoys human companionship and loves affection.  She loves her toys and her squeaky ball and has the energy level of a much younger dog.  She is a high drive, high energy girl -- even as a senior. Mya is comfortable and trustworthy in the house, she has had full access to all parts of her former home with no incidence of chewing or soiling.  She is confident and brave, thunderstorms and fireworks do not daunt her; however, this last change has brought her to her knees.  She is devestated at the loss of her home.  She is very, very sad and does not fully understand what she did wrong to cause her to lose her home. She is scared and thoroughly confused.   As a mature dog, Mya faces a long, lonely wait for a home in the kennel. Unfortunately, an older dog is not right up there on the top of the list for most families to adopt....and this is a shame.  This is a beautiful animal that has lived with people, loves people and deserves much better.  Please consider her - at least for a foster home - so that her remaining years are at least spent in the warm comfort of a loving home.

UPDATE: Now that we've had some time to take a closer look at Mya, we have learned that she can get along with the right dog(s).

Sometimes, dogs are turned in by families that tell us their dog does not get along with other dogs. However, "typically", dogs are pack animals. But, just as with humans, they don't always like every single member of their same species. This doesn't neccessarily mean that they will never get along with another dog. Sometimes, it's a matter of them being with the right dog that has the right energy. Mya met Jazz and Layla and had no problems with either one of them. Both of these dogs are extremely laid back and not dominant whatsoever. In other cases where pack members don't get along, it's a lack of leadership on the owner's part. If the dog does not see you as the pack leader, they WILL assume that role in whatever way they see fit. This is why training is so critical; so the dog sees and respects you as pack leader.

Whatever the case was with Mya's former life, we are working hard to see that she is fulfilled and happy. She's typically very low keyed unless you have a ball for her to chase. But given her advanced age, her having a ball to chase is not at the top of her priority list. Having someone to love her unconditionally is and she is content just being with you and leaning against you while she waits to be petted.

She would probably do best with a dog that is not dominant, has low energy, mentally balanced and stable and possibly somewhat independent.

DESCRIPTION: Puppies!  Cute, squirmy, adorable and active little puppies!  Amos is one of 6 - Three boys and three girls - who have come to us from a rural shelter.  Mom was a German Shepherd and Dad was a roving troubadour - probably a Labrador Troubadour  :) But, no one is sure, so for now this boy, just like his siblings is a GSD mix puppy and is very, very cute and is in need of a permanent home.  He is residing comfortably in his foster home right now - waiting.  Adopting a puppy is a serious business that we at MAGSR do not take lightly.  This is a commitment of about 12 or more years and it involves many things -- love and patience and most of all a commitment to the dog that this puppy will become.  He will need training to become a canine good citizen and to make that bond to his people that is so important.  Please consider all the aspects of adopting a puppy - the chewing, and more chewing, the mess that can be involved,  and the expenses that will be incurred.  We want our puppies to be your puppies forever. Please do ask to meet Amos - He will be receiving his public very soon.  His foster mom will update with news and recent pictures soon.

UPDATE: Hi, this is Amos.  I've been busy getting bigger and learning what a pup needs to know to find a home.  We're working on that housebreaking stuff and I have never met a newspaper I didn't like.  Now the weather is getting nicer, I understand this outside stuff.  We had more people here this weekend and I really liked playing with them.  I missed them and asked Aunt Patty to get me a new toy.  It was so cool!  She brought me a puppy!  Lupe is so much fun to play with but I really want my own people.  Got pup?
